A Curious Ufo Experience In Laurel Delaware That Involved Both Sight And Sound

At approximately 11:30 p.m., in late April of 2006, James XXXXXXXX, age twenty-nine, was walking his dog in the backyard of his home in Laurel, Delaware, a few miles north of the Maryland line, when he noticed a strange noise coming from overhead. As both he and his wife, XXXXXX XXXXXXXX, later told me, it sounded like "static" or a "flag flapping against a pole." XXXXX eventually returned to the house, where the sound was inaudible, but periodically went back outside to see if it was still there. It was. When he shined his flashlight toward the spot in the sky from which it appeared to be emanating, the sound would get louder and move away from the beam of light. However, he saw nothing.

At about 2:00 a.m. the next morning he woke XXXXXX up and asked her to come outside and listen. She did, and not only heard the same sound, but also saw a totally dark, oval object hovering overhead. The sighting lasted for about fifteen seconds, after which the object simply disappeared. She noticed no lateral or vertical movement whatsoever, just its sudden disappearance. Nor did she discern any distinctive features. It appeared to be fairly small; at one point in our interview, conducted by telephone on April 24, 2006 (I also interviewed her husband during the same phone call), she said that it looked to be about "eight feet" in diameter, but she's not at all sure of that estimate, She's also not exactly sure how high it was, as there were no reference points. However, it was a clear night, with only a few clouds in the sky.

XXXXXX was extremely upset and called her father, XXXXX XXXXXXXXX, who lives about three miles away in the same city (she said they didn't call the authorities for fear they'd think that she and her husband were "crazies"). XXX arrived about 2:40 a.m. and remained there for about twenty minutes. He neither saw nor heard the object (to be sure, XXX is slightly hard of hearing), although both his daughter and son-in-law heard it plainly while he was there. XXX told me he shined a powerful flashlight in the direction from which they said the sound was emanating, and XXXXXX and XXXXX reported the same oscillation and shift in position that they'd noticed earlier.

After the object disappeared from XXXXXX's sight, the peculiar sound continued until at least 4:30 a.m., when XXXXX finally went to bed. Their four-year-old son, X.X., appears to have slept soundly through the whole incident.

The XXXXXXXX's are a very nice young couple who, until this event, have had at best a marginal interest in the UFO phenomenon, although I do know that XXXXXX's father is very much interested in the subject, despite the fact that he's never had a sighting. (It was XXX who suggested that his daughter call me.) The region is semi-rural, and XXXXXX said that there's a field upon which cows graze about a hundred yards away on the opposite side of their street. I've asked her to ask the farmer whether he noticed any disturbance among his stock that night or if one of them had been mutilated. (XXXXX didn't mention any unusual behavior on the part of their dog, but this is an aspect of the matter that needs further investigation. I've also asked XXXXXX to draw a sketch of what she saw and will update this report when I receive it.)

A couple of additional items of possible interest: As she watched the object, XXXXXX said it suddenly occurred to her that "that's where people go that disappear." It came to her out of the blue as she stood there gazing upward. Also, in response to my question about any possible "missing time" she said that she can't account for about forty-five minutes between the time her father left, at about 3:00 a.m., and when she went to bed around 3:45 a.m. (XXXXX said he returned to the house and, except for occasionally stepping outside to check on the sound, felt compelled to play online poker until around 4:30 a.m.) This may be unrelated to the event in question, but, given its possible abduction implications, it cannot be overlooked.

XXXXXX also said she found it peculiar that when they spoke to her father on her cell phone, both she and XXXXX heard a great deal of static; however, XXX XXXXXXXXX heard none whatsoever. She added that when she was outside, watching the object and hearing the sound, she was scared, but, at the same time, felt personally safe and had no fear for her son's welfare. However, when she returned to the house that changed, and she felt someone (or something) was watching her and she was nervous about her own and X.X.'s safety.

Finally, there's a curious epilogue to this incident-actually two of them. On October 22, 2006, when XXXXXX stopped by her parents' house to drop off X.X. while she and her husband went out to dinner, the whole family, including XXX's wife XXX, saw four lights hovering above an open field opposite the house. As XXX later described the scene to me in an e-mail message, "[T]hey were lined up and kept changing colors and would appear and disappear. All I can say is they were very strange and a couple of cars pulled off side of road to look at them. They weren't making any kind of noise at all. The show probably lasted about five to ten minutes and then they were gone. I don't know if they were UFO's or what but I just had an uneasy feeling the whole time." About a month later, on Thanksgiving evening, when the family had gathered for dinner, the UFOs returned to the field in front of XXX's house. This time, there were only two of them, but they behaved in the same peculiar fashion. One can't help but wonder if they were tracking the XXXXXXXXX-or more specifically, I suspect, XXXXXX XXXXXXXs-for what purpose only they know.
