But while NASA researchers are still pondering the question of two spots, the team is expecting even a few more surprises as Dawn will orbit the dwarf planet a mere 233 miles from its surface, detailing it entirely to develop a detailed 3D image of Ceres.

Not that it's the result of anyone's incompetence or dishonesty at all; it just happens. One author or historian gets a fact wrong for whatever reason, and everyone else just piles on, until 20 years later the mistaken story is accepted as fact.
For instance, conventional wisdom in the UFO world says that Dr. Hynek served as a consultant to the Air Force on all three incarnations of its UFO research group: Project Sign, Project Grudge and Project Blue Book. This is not so. I have discovered that Hynek only worked on Project Sign and Project Blue Book. He was so late with his final report for Project Sign, however, that by the time he submitted it, Project Sign had morphed into Project Grudge, and his report was included in the Grudge final report.
Don't feel bad if you got that one wrong. When I mentioned it the other day to Mark Rodeghier, the man who now maintains Hynek's UFO research organization, CUFOS, he chuckled and said, "Yea, I had that one wrong for a long time!"
Now, let's take the case of the "unidentified flying object." When the modern era of flying saucer activity began in 1947, the terms "unidentified flying object" and "UFO" didn't yet exist. That's according to researchers at the University of Sheffield, and the University of Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, who claim this picture of particulate matter in the Earth's stratosphere is the long awaited proof of extraterrestrial life.
Not content with solving one of the universe's greatest mysteries, however, the researchers also claim that their findings explain the origins of humanity and reveal that all life on earth originally came from space.
Professor Milton Wainwright and his team made the discovery after launching a balloon high into the stratosphere during the Perseid meteor shower last year.
The balloon was launched 27 km into the earth's atmosphere and was equipped with sterile slides designed to capture tiny biological organisms.
During the trip one of the slides caught an organism, around 10microns in size, which Wainwright says is a structure 'colloquially called 'the dragon particle' which scientific analysis shows is made of carbon and oxygen and is therefore not a piece of cosmic or volcanic dust.'
In an interview with the Daily Express, Wainwight explained that it was unclear whether the organism was a single life-form or was made up of a number of smaller microbes.
He was also unequivocal that the biological entity was "like nothing found on earth".
"What is amazing is that these organisms appear on the sampling stubs in an absolutely pristine condition," he told the paper.
"There is no pollen, grass or pollution particles found with them, or for that matter soil or volcanic dust."
"Unless a means of lifting them from Earth exists which selectively sieves them out from other Earth-derived debris then they must be incoming from space.
"This, plus the fact that some of the biological material samples by the team produce impact craters when they hit the sampler, confirms their space origin."

However claims from Professor Milton Wainwright have attracted criticism from the scientific community. One astrobiologist told Space.com "The jump to the conclusion that it is alien life is a big jump and would require quite extraordinary proof. He went on to tell the site that Wainwright would need to show that the organism was composed of all D amino acids instead of L amino acids, that is, some kind of proof that the debris did not contain the same biochemistry as Earth objects.

Here's the blurb from the cover of Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini's book, "INEVITABLE ILLUSIONS; HOW MISTAKES OF REASON RULE OUR MINDS" [John Wiley he opens his blog to all comers (mostly) giving free reign to an admittedly few UFO hobbyists: ET advocates, exemplified by David Rudiak (who is a member of Mr. Randle's Roswellian Dream Team), skeptics, represented by Lance Moody, Christopher Allen, and Gilles Fernandez, along with assorted nobodies.
Mr. Randle's visitors continue to get immersed in the minutiae of the 1947 Roswell incident, hacking away at the tale, "ad infinitum, ad eternum, and ad nauseum."
A scrutiny of the back-and forths, beclouded by Mr. Rudiak's extensive displays of Roswell detritus, shows that the thinking behind the commentary is flawed, in ways that Piattelli-Palmarini examples in his book (pictured above).
The over-riding premise of "cognitive illusions" is footnoted by quasi-magical thought, the psychology of typicality, and heuristic "mental tunnels" which create bias. [Page 19 ff.]
Chapter Six of the book, The Fallacy of Near Certainty, provides references to capital and systematic mistakes with its naive forms of extrapolation. [Page 111 ff.]
The patina of Mr. Rudiak's droning presentations highlight what Piattelli-Palmarini is driving at:
In the world of probability one cannot, even where the reliability is very close to 100 percent (or absolute certainty) - such as 95 percent - extrapolate. [ibid]
The specifics of "overconfidence" outlined, beginning on Page 116, derive from a 1977 paper in the "Journal of Experimental Psychology "[Fischoff, Slovic, Lichtenstein] where persons "certain of their subjects" thought they were 100 percent correct, and rated their probability of being wrong as one in a thousand, in ten thousand, or even in a million. [Page 117].
Mr. Rudiak presents his views with that kind of overconfidence.
That Mr. Rudiak knows his subject matter, Roswell, better than most, is obvious.
That skeptics (Moody, CDA, Fernandez) goad him into lavishing his knowledge on Randle's readers creates an argumentative scenario which diminishes the basics of the Roswell incident and UFOs in general.
Roswell, no matter how one perceives it, tells us nothing about UFOs as they exist today. Or what their import is from past observations.
The details that Mr. Rudiak generously provides and Mr. Randle encourages are not debunked by the skeptical group. They engage, also, in many of the cognitive flaws that Piattelli-Palmarini outlines, such as not knowing or using Bayes' Law when attempting to refute Mr. Rudiak or employ a "tunnel of pessimism" [Page 139 ff.]
Piattelli-Palmarini gives several examples that, for me, show how the skeptics ruin their argumentation: Externally modulable and Subjectively incorrigible (where telling [Mr. Rudiak] that he is...inclined to commit certain errors does not immediately lead him to cease doing so. [Page 140]
UFO aficionados are inclined to be belligerent and illogical.
That's the endemic nature of the UFO topic.
UFO UpDates provides the caustic examples of belligerency and illogic.
Mr. Randle's blog isn't as compassing, but it gives an outline of how far and how low the UFO phenomenon has driven academic civility.
Perhaps some of Mr. Randle's habitu'es will seek out the book mentioned here and mend their ways.
(I doubt any will do that. They are victims of their own cognitive illusions.)

I've been getting a lot of emails about recent UFO sightings outside Austin, Texas this weekend. They all sounded like usual stories I've heard, but one of them that I'm going to share was really quite exciting. This email comes from Carl.
I live outside of Austin at my ranch. I just had a long and trying day of work. It was just around dusk and I was outside finishing off a little light ground work while smoking a cigar.
I ended up looking out into the field full of cows to see them running around scared. At this point I was thinking that there might of been an animal or some poachers trying to steal the cows. I ran inside, grabbed my rifle and ran out into the field to see what it was.
The further out I got, I noticed there was something large in the field. At the time I thought it was some sort of poacher contraption for gathering up cows to steal. I pointed my gun and let a round off. All of a sudden blinding light appeared from the object. It was blazing the light out in all directions. I ended up stumbling back and falling down.
At this point, this object in my field started to slowly rise up above the ground. About a few yards. Finally it just shot up vertically very fast and out of site. At this point I laid on the ground for a few more minutes to process what I saw. I got up, and started walking back to my house. I kept rationalizing that I must of worked too hard today and just had a delusional spell. There was no possible way I saw a UFO.
The next morning, I went back out to the same spot in the field to find a see a crop circle on the ground. It was perfect shape and all the grass was flattened perfectly. I've been pretty freaked out about this and I'm not sure what to think. Being a Texan, I'm not supposed to believe in this stuff, but I really don't know. I have yet tell anyone, since I know they'll think I'm crazy.

Thanks for the email Carl. That was one of the most recent UFO sightings that I found very exciting. You maybe the first human being to ever see a UFO create a crop circle.
