Nearly half the population believes UFOs could be a sign of extraterrestrial visitation.
A HuffPost/YouGov poll reveals that 48 percent of adults in the United States are open to the idea that alien spacecraft are observing our planet -- and just 35 percent outright reject the idea.
The poll was seen as vindication from the community of UFO researchers who often feel they are laughed off by government officials.
"It's always been intriguing to me how we act as though only kooks and quacks and little old ladies in tennis shoes believe in flying saucers. And it's never been true, at least for 30 or 40 years," said former nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, who was the original civilian investigator of the events surrounding the legendary Roswell, NM, UFO crash of 1947.
Friedman is very outspoken on the idea that some UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial vehicles.
"The believers are far more quiet, but far more on the side of reality," Friedman told The Huffington Post. "When you look at the polls, it's clear. And I see the benefit of that, personally, because I've only had 11 hecklers in over 700 lectures. I've been out there, all over the place, in every state, 18 other countries, and I know that my audience is more than tolerant -- they're accepting. It's been one of the things that really has kept me going."
In the HuffPost/YouGov poll, conducted between Sept. 6-7, 1,000 adults were asked if they either believed or didn't believe that some people have witnessed UFOs that have an extraterrestrial origin.
When YouGov offered respondents the choice between "slightly disagree, disagree" and "strongly disagree," those numbers added up to 35 percent who are skeptical of the notion that any UFOs may be alien-related.
However, nearly half of the adults surveyed (48 percent) resounded in the affirmative, leaving 16 percent who indicated that they weren't sure on either side of the ET issue.
That 48 percent may seem like a much higher number from a HuffPost/YouGov poll earlier this year which showed that a quarter of Americans think alien visitors have come to Earth.
"The thing about that poll is that it had a really high percentage of people saying they weren't sure," said Huffington Post polling director Emily Swanson. "In this new poll, we have a couple of things that maybe pressed some people into having a stronger opinion.
"One of those things is that we gave people a lot of gradations of the ability to agree. We had 'strongly agree' to 'only slightly agree.'"
Swanson further explained how, in the previous poll, "we asked about aliens coming to Earth. In the new poll, we're talking about UFOs of extraterrestrial origin and whether people have seen or experienced those. There may be a difference in terms of how people are interpreting that.
"Some people might be imagining aliens coming to Earth -- meaning like little green men actually on the ground. Whereas, a UFO, in theory could be an unmanned spacecraft, just some kind of contact with alien technology, and not necessarily actual aliens being on Earth physically. It's very interesting that the people who are on the fence actually seem to be somewhat inclined to say that they do believe."
The breakdown of responses include:
- Those who believe that some UFOs are alien in nature include 49 percent of men and 48 percent of women.
- College grads in this category show up at 37 percent while 53 percent of those who went to college but didn't graduate are among the UFO-ET believers.
- From a political perspective, the ET believer camp reveals 58 percent to be Democrats, 47 percent Independents and 37 percent Republicans.
Based on these current survey figures, Friedman would like to see fewer UFO eyewitnesses labeled as kooks.
"Polling has one advantage: Nobody knows who you're talking to. It's anonymous, and people are willing to say things if they know it's not going to be attributable to them," he said.

If you're a Star Trek fan, you may recall in the series "ST:The Next Generation," in the episode entitled "Relics" (First aired: 12 October 1992), the "Enterprise" picks up a distress call from a transport vessel that has been missing for 75 years. "As the "Enterprise" drops out of warp to respond to the signal, the starship is rocked violently by a massive gravitational field. Although initial scans do not find the source of the field, they trace the field to its center and discover a massive spherical structure, 200 million kilometers in diameter (or two-thirds of the Earth's orbit around the Sun). The sphere's dimensions are consistent with those of the (until then) theoretical structure known as a Dyson Sphere."1 This is the episode in which the "Enterprise" discovers that a pattern has been locked in the transport vessel's transporter buffer these past 75 years, and after some tinkering by the "Enterprise" crew, Captain Montgomery "Scotty" Scott materializes on the transporter pad.The Dyson Sphere is named after noted physicist Freeman Dyson, who originated the idea in 1959. Via @projectblackcat, I found a link to the Discovery Enterprise blog, which features a video of Dyson from the TED Conference -- Technology, Entertainment, Design -- held in Monterey, California, in February 2003. I'll save you the trouble of clicking on over to the DE blog and include the video below. Dyson speaks on searching for life in the outer Solar System; he is a genius, a space geek, even a comedian, as you'll see if you watch the vid, and though he rambles a bit, if you have the time (approximately 20 minutes), it is well worth the investment. More after the vid....If you access the Discover Enterprise blog link above, you will also find a reference to an essay by Dr. Gregory L Matloff: "The Reenchantment of the Solar System: A Proposed Search for Local ET's," published in 1998. But, unfortunately, the link to that essay is broken; in fact, every link in a Google search for that essay was broken or not found. This alone intrigued me, and I'm not one to give up easily. The majority of the broken links led to the domain name "nidsci.org" -- National Institute for Discovery Science. So, I sought out the Internet Archives (aka, the Wayback Machine), searched for that domain name, and then searched the earliest entry, which happened to be April 2000. And, I found the link to Matloff's essay. (I love it when things come together like this!) Matloff writes: If life is indeed prevalent in the cosmos, where are our talkative neighbors?Perhaps they are all around us, with some migrants even within our own solar system. Perhaps we have not found them because directed radio signals in the hydrogen and hydroxyl bands is not the best medium of interstellar communication. Perhaps very advanced extraterrestrials are not really interested in talking with us primitives.To establish contact then, we may have to be the active party. First humanity must unambiguously detect an alien presence, then we must be the ones to clamor for attention. After all, entomologists devote little time to communication with termites. But if a termite colony signaled us in binary or Morse codes, we would immediately take notice.Conventional SETI is dissatisfying from a human point of view. Even if we detect beamed radio signals from a cosmic civilization located a mere 30 light years from the Sun, a simple exchange of greetings would require a human lifetime.But the solar system is an immense place, both in time and space. Our exploration of this realm has barely begun. As Papagiannis [see reference in original essay] has noted, extraterrestrial colony ships may have crossed the interstellar gulf within the distant past and may be within our solar system, in world ships that masquerade as asteroids or comets.If we can detect these objects and communicate with their occupants, the reenchantment of the solar system will have been established. Direct communication with these godlike elders will become possible by masers, lasers, or spacecraft. And the answers to our queries will arrive rapidly. Then, astronomers will begin to fill the roles of the ancient temple priests and priestesses. Terrestrial civilization will enter a new golden age as we learn the wisdom of the "elders" and begin to fulfill our galactic role.I believe it is Dyson who brings up the idea of using infrared -- searching for infrared -- in his TED talk. Which begs the question: We've been searching for radio transmissions for several decades now, but with no positive results. So, as Matloff suggests, maybe we need to be searching for something different?TimesOnline for March 4 interviews Jill Tarter, Director of the Center for SETI Research in Mountain View, California. Ms. Tarter is specifically asked: "Why are we searching for radio waves from aliens? Couldn't aliens have a completely different means of communication?" To which she responds: "We evolved on a planet that is illuminated by the Sun. We developed sensory receptors that are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation that happen to peak at 5,500 Angstroms, where the Sun peaks. Radio is just long light - it's not very hard to get from sensing light to sensing radio. If you're trying to attract the attention of an emerging technology -- and we're about the youngest technology in the galaxy that could have any chance of having an interstellar conversation -- you would probably use something that's simple and attention-getting." (via @daj42)The issue I have with Ms. Tarter's response is that she makes the assumption that "others" are trying to reach "us, "the youngest technology in the galaxy"; and that's a huge assumption. It could be that there are advanced species in our galaxy, who have absolutely no interest in searching for others, and thus don't know that we even exist. We need to change our assumption: If ETs aren't trying to communicate with us -- and if they're not listening either -- then we need to get their attention in some other manner.All this, of course, is just a lead-in discussion for the unveiling of the cover for "Is Anybody Out There?" -- my forthcoming title, co-edited with Nick Gevers, to be published by DAW Books, via Martin H. Do such civilizations inevitably implode or self-destruct within a few hundred years? Is our definition of intelligence fatally subjective? Are aliens among us right now, unseen? Are there aliens everywhere? These are just some of the many possibilities explored in "Is Anybody Out There?"

Working in Sunroom I noticed a bright orange orb/globe in the NE sky by the tree line at approx 55 to 60 degrees on the horizon looked like the sun but much smaller kind of like the flame of a rocket seen from below. Once I stopped what I was doing and further looked saw four additional lights appear to the north directly behind the orange orb and they moved in unison... Thought I was seeing things and that it was possibly some kind of reflection so I called the wife to come out and when we both returned to the same approximate viewing area to look all of the lights seen were at a greater height approx 70 degrees on the horizon moving to the east and through the cloud cover. When I first noticed the object, I thought perhaps it was a satellite or the International Space Station and just the setting sun causing a reflection, but the other four lights that then appeared and seemed to trail the first made me suspect of that explanation. On the north to south trajectory they did not appear to move fast - just steady, but when going to the east and gaining altitude the speed appeared to at least double. No real reaction except that it seemed weird to observe something like this like some kind of weird sci-fi flick. I would think there has to be some kind of rationale explanation, if it had just been the orange orb/globe than I suppose it was the sun reflecting on something The four white lights in a diamond pattern, which stayed in unison with it, are what threw my wife and I a curve. We lost sight of the objects in the movement to the east and the increase in elevation when finally blocked by cloud formation.

In 1963, I was living in Vincennes, Indiana. That September I was contacted by an Air Force reserve captain, the CO for the local 1127th Air Reserve Squadron, requesting a briefing concerning our NICAP team's investigations of UFOs. This briefing was scheduled to be given at the Robert Green Auditorium on the 16th of that month. I was flattered and simply thought that this interest was due to the increased UFO activity in the region, particularly the 1963 UFO concentration or "mini-flap" in southern Illinois. But it now appears there was more to it than that
My briefing covered the UFO subject in general, but highlighted the 1963 mini-flap, especially the part about Blue Book sending a special team from Dayton to investigate the S. Illinois sightings. Preliminary investigations are usually carried out by the UFO officer at a nearby Air Force base. In this case it would have been an intelligence officer from Scott Air Force Base at Belleville, Illinois, near St. Louis. However, this time Blue Book had sent a TEAM of investigators, including no less than the Project Blue Book chief, Lt. Col. Robert J. Friend.
The front page of the August 12th issue of the Wayne County Press had the photo and caption: "A TEAM OF AIR FORCE PHYSICISTS were in Fairfield over the week end checking last week's light-in-the-sky stories. Here they are reading about it all in the press...Lt. Col. Robert J. Friend (center), Capt. Hector Quintinalla, right and Sgt. Charles R. Sharp." This team TEAM had checked the Austin boy's automobile for radiation in the Wayne City Car Chase and investigated a few of the 60-70 reported incidents in the area that week.
My briefing covered the key points of the concern about serious UFO reports, including the possibility of accidental war from misinformed air defense radar men mistaking UFOs for Soviet missiles during dangerous alert periods. But many years later, researchers located a document that mentioned a mysterious government project known as Project "Moon Dust" (Just Caus report). They discovered that the retrieval of downed space objects, including UFOs, was the responsibility of a "special unit" at Fort Belvoir, NJ., the 4602d Air Intelligence Service Squadron.
TEAM OF AIR FORCE PHYSICISTS IN S. ILLINOIS, 1963
I was aware of the 4602d's participation for two reasons: Ruppelt had mentioned it in his book and Air Force Regulation 200-2 had also mentioned it. The latter was an Intelligence regulation titled "Unidentified Flying Objects Reporting". It dealt only with UFO-related questions: "The Air Defense Command has a direct interest in the facts pertaining to UFOB's reported within the ZI and has, in the 4602d Air Intelligence Service Squadron (AISS), the capability to investigate these reports. The 4602d AISS is composed of specialists trained for field collection and investigation of matters of air intelligence interest which occur within the zone of the ZI." I had assumed, however, that the "collection" part probably always referred to just reports and sometimes items that turned out to be IFOs, and that anything else was wishful-thinking. As it turns out, there was more to it.
On January 3, 1953, the 4602d (AISS) was created by Air Defense Command regulation 24-4. The designation of the "special unit" at Fort Belvoir changed a number of times. The 4602d became the 1006th AISS in July 1957. In April 1960 it became the 1127th USAF Activities Group. That designation became important when tracking the Project Moon Dust (Kevin Randle's full report) and Operation Blue Fly documents. Project Moon Dust was set up by the U.S. Air Force to locate, recover, and deliver descended foreign space vehicles (including UFOs). Operation Blue Fly was established to facilitate expeditious delivery to the Foreign Technology Division (FTD) of Moon Dust and other items of great technical intelligence interest (once again including UFOs).
We had always suspected that Project Blue Book (the official AF UFO project) was merely a PR front, and there was evidence that some types of UFO project teams were active even after Blue Book closed down in December of 1969. But now we knew who some of these people were, and we had it from a reliable source: The Bolender Memo of 20 October 1969. Brigadier General C. H. Bolender wrote, "Moreover; reports of unidentified flying objects which could affect national security are made in accordance with JANAP 146 or Air Force Manual 55-11, and are not part of the Blue Book system." The real responsibility for UFO reports was located in Langley, Virginia and not Dayton, Ohio. This also explained why some important case files were not found in the Blue Book archives.
Kevin Randle:
"On January 3, 1953, the 4602d Air Intelligence Service Squadron (AISS) was created by Air Defense Command regulation 24-4 in what might be considered an amazing coincidence. The Robertson Panel convened about two weeks later. They reviewed the information, suggested answers for the previously listed unidentifieds, and recommended that the myth be taken from the UFO sighting reports. They suggested that the media be used to "educate" the public about flying saucers. They believed that if they could teach the public about the nature of UFOs, then the number of sighting reports would drop off."
Captain Edward J. Ruppelt:
"The panel didn't recommend that the activities of Blue Boot be cut back, and they didn't recommend that it be dropped. They recommended that it be expanded. Too many of the reports had been made by credible observers, the report said, people who should know what they're looking at-people who think things out carefully. Data that was out of the circumstantial evidence class was badly needed. And the panel must have been at least partially convinced that an expanded effort would prove something interesting because the expansion they recommended would require a considerable sum of money. The investigative force of Project Blue Book should be quadrupled in size, they wrote, and it should be staffed by specially trained experts in the fields of electronics, meteorology, photography, physics, and other fields of science pertinent to UFO investigations."
Kevin Randle:
"Then, just after the conclusion of the Robertson Panel, Blue Book was stripped of its investigative function. Sighting reports were no longer to be sent to Blue Book and ATIC at Wright-Patterson, but to the 4602d at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. A series of new regulations and special units was created that carefully spelled out who had the responsibility for UFO investigation, and it was not Blue Book. Seven months later, on August 26, 1953, the 4602d was tasked with the official investigation of UFOs under Air Force Regulation 200-2. The regulation required that all UFO reports from inside the United States be transmitted to the 4602d before they were sent on to Project Blue....an organization other than Blue Book and ATIC (would) be alerted first in a UFO report. Then the 4602d would determine if it was to be forwarded to ATIC at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Primary responsibility for UFO-related reports was held at Fort Belvoir, Virginia."
Randle continues:
"Project Blue Book was nothing more than a public relations outfit designed to identify objects and to convince the public that something was being done. In November 1961 another policy was established by the air force in a document sent to various air force intelligence functions. It outlined the establishment of the "AFCIN Intelligence Team Personnel." It was more proof that the air force was interested in UFOs and that it has continued its investigation of them. There is a portion of the document deleted, but in paragraph 2, subparagraph c, it says, "In addition to staff duty assignments, intelligence team personnel have peacetime duty functions in support of such Air Force projects as Moondust, Bluefly, and UFO, and other AFCIN directed quick reaction projects which require intelligence team operational capabilities."One of my experiences that indicated there was somebody in the government officially still in charge of UFO reports occurred in 1983. For some time now we have known that something very strange and important was going on in October and November of 1975. We have proof that there were incidents that, to quote from released documents, "prompted the implementations of a Security Option 3 at our northern tier bases since 27 October." Sightings occurred at Loring AFB, Wurtsmith AFB, and then at Malmstrom AFB. In late 1983, an informant reported to me that there had been a major incident at NORAD during that same period which prompted a Security Option 5 alert and total "lock down" at "the Mountain" which houses NORAD. And some official UFO team from the Air Force investigated that incident.
The mystery of who they were is probably solved. Although it could have been Air Force OSI agents, the informant told me that the men who interrogated his group were from "the Air Force UFO division", six years after Blue Book shut down. It was very probably some offshoot of the 4602d AISS. But back in 1963 an Air Force reserve squadron which was a descendant of the 4602d was very interested in what we in NICAP knew about UFOs. But more importantly, we found that UFO investigations continued and in direct proportion to the events which may have, or was determined to have, an effect on national security.

while traveling eb on a rural road in upstate NY in the fall of 1970 I observed something coming at me ( wb) just above the power lines ( about 60 ft) My wife and my 2 1/2 y/o son were with me. As I slowed down and pulled of to the shoulder, the ufo was in front of me but going only about 15 mph in the opposite direction (wb) I stepped out of the car and observed a rust colored, flying wing shape ( or boomerang) craft just above the power lines ( about 50 ft ) It had lights but I do not recall what color or how many. My wife was now yelling at me to get back in the car. I did not. I watched as it passed over emitting no sound. as I turned to look at it going wb, it disappeard in about 1 second emitting no sound whatsoever and was gone in " blink of an eye'. I should have reported in in 1970 but back then it would have been ridiculed. i am much wiser now and truly believe in UFO's. Drone, missile or other? Two commercial flights have been buzzed by similar UFOs north of Perth
Aviation experts and ufologists are puzzled by an object that forced a Perth-bound flight to take evasive measures last year to avoid a collision.

On March 19, a Skippers Aviation flight was forced to change it's approach to Perth airport after the crew spotted a "bright strobe light" directly in front of the aircraft.
The De Havilland DHC-8 aircraft was about 25 kilometres north-east of Perth at an altitude of around 4000 feet when the object passed within 20 metres of the flight, according to an incident report lodged with the Australian Transport Safety Authority.
The pilot's testimony in the report described the object as "cylindrical in shape and grey in colour"
UFO researcher Paul Dean told 6PR that while this object is definitely terrestrial in origin it begs further investigation. Especially given it was the second time a Skippers flight had reported an incident like this.
Speaking with Chris Ilsley, Mr Dean said another Skippers' flight reported an identical incident in nearly the same location at approximately the same time on January 4, 2013.
"Someone is launching stuff, possibly missile like, from the ground. And whether it's being deliberately done at planes or not we don't know. But it tells us there is something not quite right"
Mr Dean said military sources have ruled out the possibility of a drone or a missile test from known military sites like Pearce Air Base. An assertion that is backed by the ATSA's report from the 2014 incident
