Lately, for my book Unseen Beings, Unseen Worlds, I have been doing a bit of research into Fairies, Leprechauns, Elves, Gnomes, Banshees and Sidhes. All those and "ghosts" and UFO/alien activity are directly and indirectly connected. One thing often links to another by extremely curious threads or coincidences, as is the case in all paranormal activity.
A retired lady in Sacramento has graciously sent me several letters describing some of the out-of-the ordinary experiences she has had in her lifetime. She is obviously a very intelligent woman, judging by the tone of her letters, and she has had a number of odd occurrences happen to and around her. I always wonder why it is that certain people, for no discernible reason, seem to be singled out to experience or be shown highly paranormal activity.
One of this woman's first experiences was when she was a little girl. This is a slightly edited excerpt from one of her letters:
"...and when I was around five years old I captured a little man in a backyard tomato patch. The tomato patch belonged to our attic tenant, an old Italian woman. The little man looked very much like the Mickey Rooney of today. He was dressed in handsome, well-made clothes. He had on a white shirt, green vest, green knee-pants, white knee-length socks and shiny black shoes with silver buckles. I grabbed him. He struggled and cussed me out in gibberish. I carted him into the house where my father -- shaken to the core -- ordered me to let him go. The little man scampered out the door and was barely able to climb the few steps leading back down into the yard."

"But finally it got away and they had had bad luck ever since, the old man said sadly: "For me, though I've lost my sight, the day I took the Leprechaun I thought no harm, only that we would be made up. I am thinking different now by the way things have gone. Sure we are among them in God's world who are born to be poor."
Getting back to another of the lady's letters... one night she was working a late shift in a hospital in California: "I was up late reading, again waiting for the nurses to come in. My door was locked and bolted to be safe, when I caught sight of a bunch of smoke that had gathered over near the door. I wondered how cigarette smoke could bunch up like that when the last cigarette was well out and the smoke gone. So I turned my head for a better look.
"The smoke seemed to be consolidating. Then a beautiful lady emerged. She had a great mop of golden hair that fell to her mid-back. Her skin was pearly white, her eyes of a pale blue or grey. She had an exquisite body, was about 5 feet 7 inches, and she was dressed in a chiffon-like garment of an ancient Grecian style -- one bare shoulder, a bodice, then three layers of flouncy pleats or gatherings. She may have been bare of foot. As she gracefully went by, she seemed to put a finger to her lips as if to say, 'Shhh, be quiet.'
"My heart pounded and shock waves went up and down my body. The lady went to the same window (where I had seen the UFO) and faded through it. Next, a big wave of sleep knocked me back into my pillows."

Is it time for the general public in the U.S. and internationally to increase understanding and preparedness about UFOs and extraterrestrial activities affecting Earth and human civilization?
Absolute secrecy on this topic seems to be transforming into the sharing of information and knowledge about extraterrestrial spacecraft and the intelligent beings involved.
From Brazil to Belgium, from Canada to China, and around our planet, more information is emerging that further educates and orients us about what could be going on. Fact-finding about UFOs continues to make significant progress, or so it seems. These efforts have probably led to better understanding about the situation.
People with backgrounds in defense and intelligence, scientists from different fields, researchers of various kinds, journalism and creative media professionals, school kids and those and those who've been around a while seem to be feeling that the UFO situation is something significant.
NEED TO KNOW, OR NOT KNOW
Here in the U.S., indications may ring true about ancient Native Americans in North America having also encountered UFOs and various kinds of unusual phenomena. Many news media professionals have done a good job reporting on significant developments involving UFOs and the many interesting details about them. At times, these journalists may have even bumped into security restrictions or intelligence insights.
EMERGING HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS
If we have learned anything from the experiences of researchers involved with Project STAR GATE (the U.S. government research program on human consciousness) it is that our awareness and perception can be quite robust and surprising. Our understanding about interesting phenomena can be both limited at times and deeply comprehensive at other times.

Advances in the understanding of human consciousness can help us deal with everyday challenges and the bigger picture. That's why it might be helpful to see what we can learn from Project STAR GATE research. The ideas of "transcendent warfare" and "transcendent power" are probably helpful. "Integrative perception" and "complementary cognition" may also be useful concepts when looking at human consciousness.
When it comes to Earth humans interacting with visitors from elsewhere, we will probably need all the resources and assets we can pull together. National security and global security will need to be addressed. Public health and safety are also very important concerns.
And, we may need to accept the fact that some elements of the situation will remain mysterious. That may just be the nature of things.

Scientists make persuasive arguments about the most likely nature of a visiting extraterrestrial civilization. If the visitors are centuries, if not millennia, ahead of us in evolution will they actually be some form of hybrid organic-machine? Or intelligence residing in machine form? Humans use electronic instruments to regulate heart rates and control prosthetic limbs. What will the future hold for us? It would be much more convenient to have access to the Internet directly in our brains rather than needing a computer interface sitting at a desk. This ties in with the idea of technological singularity. Singularity in this sense refers to the point that which technology has advanced far enough to surpass human intelligence, perhaps by some sort of transhuman state in which the human mind is merged with a computer. It sounds far fetched, however supporters point to the exponential growth in computer and information technology. If the growth continues it will only be a few decades before we have microscopic computers, perhaps fully integrated into a human body. Or perhaps complex computers able to hold human intelligence? The singularity points to the time where technology transcends humanity as we know it, ushering in a new era of machine based intelligence.
So, it makes sense that an advanced extraterrestrial civilization might follow the same path, at the very least making use of technology to extend their lives in some machine form and allow them to accomplish much more. The only thing I could see stopping them (or us for that matter) would be ethical considerations. Perhaps at some point aliens would consider the complete loss of an organic body to be unpalatable from either a religious or some other social standpoint.
Physicist Paul Davies talks about machine intelligence in his new book The Eerie Silence: Renewing our search for alien intelligence.He raises the point to suggest that we need to be thinking in a broader manner when it comes to SETI research. We can't focus on the narrow speculation that an alien civilization is out there inhabiting a planet and sending electromagnetic signals as we do. Machine intelligence makes sense for many reasons. Davies and SETI researcher Seth Shostak go as far to suggest it is the most likely possibility for any civilization that we meet. Machines, if properly maintained, can operate for long periods of time. Machine intelligence, if similar to our own artificial intelligence, could be transferred from one machine to another, thus extending life even further and making space travel easier. The biggest hurdle for extraterrestrial interstellar travel is time. If you take time out of the equation we already have the technology to travel between stars - some of our own space probes have left our solar system.
What does machine intelligence mean for Direct First Contact? We need to be very flexible about what we consider. Perhaps an extraterrestrial visitor would be a space traveling computer that would enter our solar system and contact us via the communication systems we currently use. It seems unlikely any visiting extraterrestrial civilization would send up an immediate hello. They would probably want to spend some time researching our planet and civilization. The primary question would be whether or not they wanted to contact us at all. The secondary would be how best to do it.
I throw into the collective hat one idea. Perhaps an extraterrestrial machine visitor would have ability to design beings and spacecraft in any manner they would like? This would give them the ability to design a creature and a craft for a Direct First Contact event, more in line with what we might expect. They could even make things easier for us by creating beings and spacecraft as we have imagined them to be. Why not? It would certainly be less of a shock to the system to have a being we could relate to, at least initially. Creating a being that looks human might go too far, providing a whole new set of worries on our part.
I think no matter what the life form, organic or mechanical, some basic ideas apply. If they have positive intentions they will want to figure out how best to reach us and start the conversation. This is for the benefit of the new relationship and for our benefit. First Contact of any sort is going to cause major changes to our civilization. If the visitors are altruistic they will take this into account and set up a big hello that we can handle.
