Now, a further study claims that the 2014 research was based on 'inadequate analyses of the data' and that Gliese 581d does exist.
CONTROVERSY AROUND GLIESE 581D: IS IT REALLY A PLANET?
The planet was initially discovered in 2010. It was the first Earth-like planet found in the 'Goldilocks'-zone around another star.
But soon after the discovery, a group of scientists said the signals thought to be from a planet were in fact simply magnetic bursts from stars.
The latest study claims that the stellar bursts research was based on 'inadequate analyses of the data'.
They said the method is suitable for large planets, but the technique is unable to find small planets like GJ 581d. Last year, Pennsylvania State University researchers said Gliese 581d - and its companion Gliese 581g - were simply a trick of the light caused by magnetic bursts from a local star 22 light-years away.
The new British research, however, argues the method used by the Pennsylvania team was only suitable for large planets, and that it could miss small ones like GJ 581d.

The study, by Queen Mary University, London and the University of Hertfordshire, claims to use a more accurate model on the existing data.
'The existence (or not) of GJ 581d is significant because it was the first Earth-like planet discovered in the 'Goldilocks'-zone around another star and it is a benchmark case for the Doppler technique,' said lead author, Dr Guillem Anglada-Escud'e.
'There are always discussions among scientists about the ways we interpret data but I'm confident that GJ 581d has been in orbit around Gliese 581 all along.
'In any case, the strength of their statement was way too strong.
'If their way to treat the data had been right, then some planet search projects at several ground-based observatories would need to be significantly revised as they are all aiming to detect even smaller planets.
'WE'LL FIND AN EXACT REPLICA OF EARTH IN 15 YEARS', SAYS NASA
According to one of Nasa's top planet hunters, we will find a planet with oceans like Earth in the next 15 years.
Dr John Mather is an astrophysicist at the Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, and the senior project scientist on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

A group of Oregon witnesses are reporting up to 7 UFOs in the sky that appeared to interact with "fighter jets" on May 1, 2010, according to testimony from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) database.

it started off the night before(april 29) i had heard some weird sounds over my house and then last night me and 4 of my friends saw about 7 ufo's flying around the sky at around 10 pm.
i was sitting inside when one of my friends who had been outside ran in and told us that he had just seen a ufo and that it had shot some kind of pod off of it.when we came out and he pointed it out we could see one big light and a little light under, so we watched it for a few minutes and then the little pod go back into the bigger one,so then scanned the skys for a minutes and found four others that looked like the first one and they were all lined up.
so after about 10 minutes of watching the ufos we could see some fighter jets flying over from the next town that has a military base(in klamath falls oregon) so they circled our town and they kept flying right towards the ufo's but still keeping a good distance but when one of the jets got withing 400 hundred feet of one them it started to blink really fast and when they jet got about 400 hundred feet it had a flash and the jet flew off.
so we watched them for another half an hour and then on the other side of the valley we saw a light moving (same as the first one)across the sky and when it got to a darker part of the sky with no stars we started to see something blinking in that dark spot it was about 3 times faster then the jets and by the time it was about to leave we saw the jets take off after it. and then it was pretty quite for about 15 minutes and we were looking in one area of the sky and turned around to look at one of the ufo's and when we turned back to the area sky we were looking at first we saw weird shaped clouds that wernt there 10 seconds before and they stayed they for about 10 minutes not breaking shape or moving and then we had one finale sighting when we saw a longer shaped ufo flying by with 3 lights under it and it would stall and then shoot ahead a few hundred feet and stop until it was out of sight and then by the time we all went back inside the first ufo was gone. Everyone was in shocked and i was a litlle scared because of the one that had been over my house

My phone rings and it is my 20-year-old son who was about 2 miles from home at a friend's home.
He next asks me if I heard that plane. I quickly moved outside and continued the conversation and told him there were no jet sounds at my location.
His description was that 2 low flying military jets were hitting their after-burners above the residential homes.
The jets shook the foundations and rattled the window frames forcing the occupants to step outside to see if a plane was in distress.
He then described over the phone only hearing the jets and never physically seeing them.
What he did see was an erratic, fast moving star-sized object one half to one mile altitude making no sound as if it had escaped the jets, and continued its evasive darting and circling flight pattern over the Herndon/Sterling area.
The jets flew within the vicinity for a second pass, but at this point nowhere near the strobe flashing object.
His description of the object was a fast 3 pulse strobe of blue/white light followed by a quick single flash then returning to the 3 pulse strobe.
The movement was extremely fast with quick turns and circles.
The object was out of sight quickly as it is a residential neighborhood with a limited range of low altitude vision.
The object was definitely outrunning and eluding the military craft.
They wanted it and had no chance whatsoever do to the speed and maneuverability of this object. This object owned the sky!
This area is a no fly zone for small general aircraft as we are 20 miles west of Washington, DC, and as mentioned, the final approach for Dulles airport.
Any military jet traffic is only for intervention and policing of this no fly zone.
The low altitude of the jets scrambling in this vicinity would definitely be monitored by Dulles FAA authorities and force a change or alteration of incoming commercial air traffic.
Being an almost daily MUFON reader I believed my son's sighting was worthy of reporting.

Critics who claim the UFO phenomenon has no science to back it up have clearly never visited the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena website. Underfunded and under publicized eschewing the loaded three-letter acronym for the less radioactive UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), NARCAP has been compiling and analyzing commercial, private and military flight data since 1999. Over the holiday weekend, it issued a four-page checklist of recommendations for pilots to review as a proactive measure in the event of a sudden UAP encounter.
NARCAP RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE UFO IN AIRLINE SAFETY.
"Given the low survival rate of aircrews involved in midair collisions and the reported radar transparency of many UAP," reads a portion of the summary, which the nonprofit NARCAP ultimately hopes will be incorporated into the Federal Aviation Administration's Aeronautical Information Manual, "it cannot be said with certainty that UAP have not been a primary factor in past catastrophic air crashes."
Much of the weight behind these recommendations has been generated by pilots and air traffic controllers who, with guarantees of anonymity, have completed NARCAP's detailed online questionnaires. The feedback has convinced NARCAP founder and former NASA senior research scientist Dr. Richard Haines - along with an international cast of multidisciplinary volunteer researchers - that sitting back and waiting for (perhaps another) calamity is not an option.
"We have already received positive feedback about this paper from pilots and others who have visited our website," writes Haines, who tells De Void that NARCAP receives anywhere from 4 to 6 near-miss reports a year, "and we now want... help in sharing these practical recommendations with an even wider group of pilots... who might not yet know about our website."
Although near-misses are obviously rare, NARCAP contends that accounts of "other traffic" logged in the FAA's Aviation Safety Reporting System probably deserve more scrutiny. Indeed, in 2001, NARCAP issued a remarkable list of 1,305 reported UAP encounters from around the world dating back to 1916. But in Haines' landmark 2000 analysis, Aviation Safety in America - A Previously Neglected Factor, the former chief of NASA-Ames Space Human Factors Office determined that UAP encounters alone aren't the problem.
"Based upon a thorough review of pilot reports of UAP over the conterminous United States between 1950 and 2000 it is concluded that an immediate physical threat to aviation safety due to collision does not exist because of the reported high degree of maneuverability shown by the UAP. However," Haines warned, "(a) should pilots make the wrong control input at the wrong time during an extremely close encounter the possibility of a mid-air collision with a UAP still exists, and (b) if pilots rely upon their instruments when anomalous electromagnetic effects are causing them to malfunction, the possibility of an incident or accident exists."
That was 13 years ago. In an email to De Void, Haines reiterated that subsequent data has done little to alter those conclusions:
"1) Most UAP depart from the airplane by ascending upward (either vertically or at a steep angle) usually at a very high speed.
"2) Most UAP that appear relatively near an airplane (rather than at a great distance away) are described as having a metallic-appearing surface during daylight hours and are symmetrical in form (at least along one of the three orthogonal axes).
"3) When some electro-magnetic effect affects cockpit instruments when a UAP is flying nearby, that 'anomaly' almost always ceases (and the instrument[s] returns to its normal operation) as the UAP departs. Thus, there is no physical evidence of a malfunction to report."
Don't hold your breath waiting for the FAA to adopt NARCAP's recommendations. But pilots who want to be prepared for even the most unusual contingencies would do well to explore this website

The media frenzy continues!
Since the news broke that one of the UFO cases I investigated had been chosen as one of MUFON's Top Ten cases for 2012, the phone has been ringing off the hook! Trouble is, it's the same guy calling over and over. Seems Milwaukee TV station Channel X wants to do a news segment on the sighting. That's fantastic; it will make my name a household word in southeastern Wisconsin and make more people aware of the great work MUFON does.

But there is a catch: the witness, who was very happy to be interviewed over the phone last month by a newspaper reporter, is not too keen on having her face, home and neighborhood broadcast all over the region on television. Now, the TV news producer and the mighty MUFON PR machine have been very good about offering the witness all sorts of options for concealing her identity and location, and I applaud their efforts. Any other time, that might have done the trick, but it just so happens that the witness recently lost a family member and has been overwhelmed by grief. She has told me that she would love to do the TV segment but that she's too heartbroken to even consider it. She gave the ok for the TV guy to do a story just with me and Robert Powell, the MUFON National Director of Investigations... but only if we leave her and her location out of it."
To me that's the end of the discussion. The woman is grieving, so we thank her for everything she's done so far and leave her in peace. That's how I handled it, and that's what I reported back today to the mighty MUFON PR machine and to the TV news guy.
The mighty MUFON PR machine, I am happy to say, is ok with leaving the witness in peace but trying to do the segment with just me and Robert Powell, but I just got off the phone with the TV news producer, and man is he a jackass. He wants me to call the witness back and basically see how much time she needs to grieve before she's willing to do the news report. "I've got a month I can do this in!" he cheerfully reported to me. I told him again as nicely as I could that I was not going to to call the witness any more, so he tried to get me to give him her phone number and address...

The cases that make the cut, Robert explained to me, generally involve multiple witnesses (mine had two!), long time duration (mine lasted 25 seconds!) and proximity of the witnesses to the unidentified object (75 to 100 feet!).
