Don and Tom have hundreds of tapes of what the Roswell witnesses said. Why don't you talk to some of these witnesses? Surely, if Donald Schmitt had fabricated this, he needed to be taught a lesson. But most of all, the integrity of the research must reflect what the witnesses have said".

The stories point to a very large "thing". I went to the Loch [nice museum] and it's a joyful natural environment just to be in. The idea that Nessie might surface at any moment gives it that extra spice. But you get a bit nervous about the rationalizations in support of the biological monsters quickly, at least I did. At Inverness, the two feet of water running in connection to the sea, was pretty inadequate for Nessie to slosh into the Loch seasonally looking for salmon. In fact one learns that the Loch has been essentially sealed off from the sea for a very long time as far as monster traffic would be concerned. So, you're stuck with the Loch itself, unaided by the ocean, as a home for the monster. And it can't be just one, on almost any reasonable line of biological argument. I've looked at [and listened to] ecologists estimate the "carrying capacity" of the Loch, and the numbers just don't add up to a sustaining reproductive population of, say, 30 to 60 monsters. Supporters of Nessie really try to squeeze these numbers, but their behavior just makes me more nervous. Some supporters abandon the big mammal or reptile hypothesis for a lower form of life which might be vegetarian or otherwise live further down the food chain--that alone proves that even enthusiasts are worried. And it is a non-starter for me. The lower life form thing totally violates the witness testimony of the beast's characteristics. This has caused some supporters [including my buddy Henry] to just leave the monster's diet to the realm of mystery and fall back on the evidence that no matter how puzzling the "side issues", Nessie exists.
Well, it certainly has created the usual anomalistic mess of theories, speculations, flying leaps, hoaxes, nasty skeptics, and unproductive unpleasantness that we can't do without, it seems. The field's can't-get-a-real-life-so-he-spends-his-railing-about-something-he-doesn't-believe debunker continues to amaze me with whatever his motivation could be. I'm really puzzled by the person who dedicates his life to destruction rather than building, but little pockets of these guys exist all over the place. The amused one-time-in academic coward is also a knowledge criminal but at least you don't have to listen to him for long. [By the way, someone really looking at the whole data board and open-mindedly evaluating things and then speaking of those evaluations with a large dose of humility is a hero, not a coward, even if he ends up in a different place than I do.] My friend Henry is, of course on the opposite side of the debunkers and the skeptics who have come to negative conclusions. Henry, despite the fact that he doesn't talk of it this way, "believes" Nessie exists. And so do I. This "belief" he feels is adequately supported by [most prominently] Dinsdale's film, and secondarily by certain case reports and the "Rines expedition" results. He makes his case with admirable academic precision and measured language in his [best] book on the subject. But you can't fool me, my friend, you are WAY past "measured language" as far as Nessie is concerned. George Zug, of the Smithsonian, was so far past [due to the Rines results] that he sold the ranch entirely and gave not only a "final" liberal solution to the mystery, but even gave our favorite Scottish girl an official name: Nessitarias Rhombopteryx or something close to that. Other biologists doubtless thought he had flipped for the flipper photo. And out there on the edge has been Ted Holiday.
Holiday doesn't think that Nessie is an ordinary physical-world creature at all real, yes, but a denizen of that "other reality" that interfaces with ours occasionally and throws us "unreasonable" curveballs and unresearchable "unscientific" critters. Such things used to "be about" more in the olde days than today, but certain environments/locales act as "windows" or "thin places" where the two realities more often intersect. One day I was walking in a European museum and saw the beast on the left, carved into an Etruscan sarcophagus another Nessie of very long ago? I have several dilemmas when I contemplate entities like the Loch Ness Monster. Every commonsense reading of the encounter reports says that the thing is real, is big, and is at least in the form of an advanced animal shape. Close encounters can be dramatic, but apparently stop short of "animal violence". And all the biology says that the thing can't be there in any ordinary way. It's REAL, but it can't be "scientifically" real. So now is when I go All-The-Way-Fool in more ways than one. By saying the next sentence I make my buddy mad; maybe he'll forgive me if I buy him lunch the next time I see him--you'll have to remind me, Henry. And...here goes...I wonder if St. Columba didn't almost have it right not a sign of the Devil, but one of our long-time visitors from the Middle Kingdom or the lands of the Nature Spirits? There. I finally did it. All-the-way-cryptozoology-Fool. Jerry Clark at least will still speak to me.

Space weather is dangerous and a large event could have a massive impact on society. But what is 'Space Weather'? What are the possible effects? What are the questions that still need answering?
'Space Weather' describes the happenings in the environment surrounding the Earth. This 'weather' is fuelled by the Sun's unpredictable activities - more specifically solar flares, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs), coronal holes and solar prominences. We are completely dependent on the Sun, it can be our best friend or our worst enemy.

The aurora are caused by energetic particles from the Sun exciting particles in the atmosphere causing them to glow. Discovering the mechanisms behind the different features of the aurora such as flames and filamentation is one of the key features of the ASK project based in Svalbard, Sweden. During times of high solar activity, the aurora are observed at much lower latitudes than normal. In 1859, the aurora were observed as far south as Cuba and the Caribbean, and magnetometers across the world which had been measuring very minute changes in the Earth's magnetic field went crazy. Electric currents saturated the telegraph system in North America and Europe making communications across the country very difficult. Richard Carrington was a solar astronomer at the time who had been observing some abnormally large sunspots on the Sun. The day after the aurora were first observed, Carrington saw 2 bright flashes originating from the sunspot group and hours later, another wave of aurora were observed as far south as Panama. Telecommunications in the northern hemisphere became nearly impossible. Scientists today know that the Carrington Event, as it is now known, was in fact the result of two Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). The CMEs observed were the second fastest on record.
If an event equalling the Carrington Event (1859) occurred today, the results could be catastrophic. In the past we were less dependent on our phones, satellites and electricity so these events were less of a threat. But now power grids have been delocalised and have a much larger area relying on one set of transformers. In March 1989, an event three times less powerful than the Carrington Event occurred over Quebec, Canada which left 6 million people without electricity for 6 hours.
2013 was expected to be a solar maximum, the time when the Sun is the most active. This peak of the solar cycle was expected to coincide with the switching of the Sun's magnetic poles - a polarity reversal (where the North Pole becomes the South Pole and vice versa). However, the activity recently has been almost zero which indicates a possible "double minimum". We don't know why this has occurred (or even if that's what's happening), what's going on inside the Sun or even what causes these magnetic field reversals. When it does happen, the field reversal will cause turbulent waves of current throughout the Solar System which may induce geomagnetic storms in the Earth's atmosphere.

Before we can take a step towards predicting these activities, we need to be able to describe the Sun mathematically which is the basis of computational modelling. The Sun is a very complex and very active object so there is a lot of work to do on this front. Concerning space weather, we need to be able to predict the events that will change the Earth's environment. The main solar events that go on to become space weather are Solar Flares and CMEs but alongside these unpredictable expulsions of high velocity particles and radiation, there is the solar wind. The solar wind is a constant stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun. The particles within it vary from 300km/s (or 671,000mph) to 800km/s (or 1,790,000mph). The solar wind is coupled with the Earth's magnetic field so the variation of particle velocities can induce geomagnetic storms in the Earth's atmosphere. The solar wind causes the magnetosphere to expand and compress depending on how powerful the wind is at any given time. Basic laws of physics tell us that a changing magnetic field will induce a current. In particular conditions, these currents can be induced in electrical ground systems which can cause them to overload. Within satellites, solar events can induce currents in their sensitive equipment and damage can be more significant due to the impossibility of performing repairs.
SOLAR FLARES

Solar Flares appear as a sudden brightness on the surface of the Sun which includes a burst of energy across a range of wavelengths (such as gamma rays, X-rays and radio waves). The energy is produced by the reconnection of magnetic field lines on the surface of the Sun which also accelerates particles in the solar atmosphere. The number of solar flares varies on an 11 year cycle as a result of an increase of magnetic energy. What causes this 11 year cycle (or 22 year due to the positive and negative polarities of the flares) is yet to be determined but it is thought to be a result of various parts of the Sun's interior spinning at different rates, which acts like a dynamo and generates the Sun's magnetic field. Further details about this dynamo are still lacking. Sunspot number also varies with the solar cycle, but over the last 30 years, the sunspots and the magnetic fields on the Sun have been getting weaker. Scientists are waiting to find out if the imminent field reversal will shock the system into an active phase and restore the numbers or if this is an ongoing trend that they haven't quite worked out the source of.

The corona is a sphere of ionised gas (known as 'plasma') that extends millions of kilometres out from the Sun and into space. Within the corona, magnetic fields trap charged particles in a magnetic loop which eventually erupts as the magnetic fields re-organise themselves to deal with the excess energy, throwing charged particles out into space. So Coronal Mass Ejections are ejections of matter (mass) from the Sun that originate in the solar corona. CMEs, on average, take 1 to 3 days to reach Earth (whereas the radiation from solar flares travels at the speed of light and only takes 8 minutes) and spread out whereas a solar flare is much more focused.The relationship between CMEs and solar flares is yet to be solved. Sometimes CMEs occur with solar flares and sometimes on their own but even as their own entity, CMEs are still a bit of a mystery. Both CMEs and flares are rooted in magnetic field reconnection. The main difference between a flare and a CME is that while a flare puts all of its energy into radiation and is often followed by high energy particles, a CME puts its energy into propelling ions out into space at a high velocity. The trigger of a CME is also unknown. There are 2 ideas currently in contention - A CME is either triggered by a magnetic field line reconnection or it is triggered by a build up of magnetic energy from the solar corona.

Less explosive contributors to Space Weather are coronal holes (gaps in the corona that allow solar material to escape into space at high velocities) and solar prominences (large amounts of matter being propelled into space due to matter being trapped between magnetic field lines).
Particle radiation is also a big issue for satellites. An ionising particle can cause single events that damage systems both physically and in a way that can change their programming. A bit flip is an example of such an event whereby a particle comes in and flips a 0 to a 1 within a programme. The effect of this can be minimal, where only a system restart is required or the effect could be much more serious. A brief example of the results of a 'bit flip' at ground level occurred in Belgium in 2003 where 4,096 extra votes were added to one of the candidates as a cosmic ray affected a single bit in the memory system of the voting machine.
Our understanding of the causes of space weather is very general. We have a basic knowledge of the steps between an event on the Sun and the results here on Earth but our knowledge is currently insufficient to predict events effectively enough to really protect ourselves. A large solar event can come with a few days warning so by putting plans in place for how to deal with a possible shutdown of power and resources, the resulting chaos could be massively reduced. The SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft is currently 1.5 million km away from the Earth and is constantly observing the Sun and sending images and data back to Earth for scientists to analyse and work from. www.facebook.com/dbiedny10-11-11 I wanted to briefly comment on the memorial held yesterday for Budd Hopkins, at the 15th Street Friends Meeting House. The weather could not have been better, it was a clear, perfect day for this lovely affair celebrating the life and work of this wonderful man - one I'm proud to be able to call a true friend - and it primarily focused on his work in the art field, clearly demonstrating that Budd was really one of the most respected Abstract Expressionists of the famed New York School.
Leslie Kean started the proceedings with her cool, professional demeanor, even though it was obvious that she misses her partner, friend and love. Any of us would be blessed to have that kind of tenderness in our lives, and something that was plain to see was the depth of respect and love that these two people had for each other, it was both reassuring and inspiring.
His daughter showed slides of many of Budd's artworks, which were bold, colorful and as direct as the man himself. Another thing that many spoke of was Budd's sense of humor, and I can personally attest that he loved laughing like few others, and there was some really nice footage of Budd being, well, Budd.
Peter Robbins delivered an eloquent eulogy, describing working with Budd, and how much influence Budd had on his own way of thinking and dealing with others. Randy Nicherson played a video tribute to Budd, full of poignant, heartfelt scenes - there was another video compilation presented towards the end, done by Seth Keal and Charles Miller, with some really heartwarming footage of Budd dancing with his granddaughter. Another picture of Budd, his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter clearly demonstrated the uncanny resemblance of Budd and his daughter's daughter. He will live on in her.
David Jacobs spoke about Budd's work in the field of abduction research, but what really came through was how much David loved Budd as a human being and close friend. That was also evident in the way that people spoke about Budd afterwards, small conversations overheard during the subsequent reception confirmed that there was not a bad thought about Budd anywhere near the event.
There are many more details - some interesting UFO folks were in attendance, but they were outnumbered by the artist friends, thankfully - but suffice it to say that any of us would be happy and fulfilled to have this much love manifest at our departures.
To those who would attack his research, and accuse him of being a flawed human, of not being 100% hardass about his dealings with alleged abduction victims and potential hoaxers - I personally witnessed the degree of comfort this brave man gave some very distraught people, folks who were scared, confused and who didn't have anyone to turn to without being marginalized or ridiculed, and for that work alone, he should be celebrated and respected. If he was fooled by some unscrupulous folks, his decision to err on the side of kindness and compassion is perhaps a byproduct of his intensely powerful humanity and sincere desire to help others. Those who would vilify him would be well advised to check their own glass houses for hidden piles of large, rough stones.
Budd Hopkins was a great man, and I for one will miss him
