Sighting Details
Back in November 1989 my wife Katie Hodrien, and her great aunt Janice, had a stunning close encounter with a UFO while crossing the Brecon Beacons. It is something that even after all these years they remember quite vividly. After interviewing them both about the incident I can now reveal to you what occurred.
At the time of the sighting, Katie was eleven years old and her brother Tim was five. They had been on holiday visiting Janice at Leamington Spa. She was driving them home to Neath in South West Wales. Their journey took them across the Brecon Beacons moor.

It was early evening and quite dark in the sky, but the moorland was still partially visible. The weather was clear and there was very little cloud. The road was deserted and there were no other cars on it. Katie was sitting on the back seat next to her brother and staring out of the back window of the car. She noticed in the sky an object with a row of coloured lights along it. The object was quite far away and high up. There were too many lights along it to be a normal aircraft. They were flashing and changing colours, mostly white and red but some other colours too. The object was moving slowly across the sky. Katie alerted her great aunt to the object, and she also glanced back at it. The object seemed to keep changing position in the sky. It was there one minute, gone the next, and it kept reappearing in different places in relation to the moving car. Janice was trying to scare Katie and Tim about the object, saying it was going to come and get them.
How the object appeared at a distance:
Suddenly the object appeared much closer to the car and much lower in the sky, Katie estimates under 100 foot up. Both Katie and Janice could now clearly see that the lights were in a curved line as if along the edge of a large disc shaped object, however the main body of the object could not be seen. Katie estimates that it was at least twice as big as a house. It was behind and to the right of the car hovering in the sky. At this point Janice decided to stop to get a photograph of the object as she was very interested in what it could be. She pulled up at the side of the road and got out. She went round to the back of the car and opened the boot to get her camera. The object appeared to now be stationary and it was completely silent.

Katie started to panic at this point and was screaming at Janice to get back in the car. Janice was also a little un-nerved by the object but mostly fascinated by it. She got the camera out but couldn't work out how to use the night setting on it. Because of this, and the fact that Katie was very frightened, she decided to get back in the car and continue driving. After this neither witness looked back to see if the object was still following them so it was not seen again.
Janice also informed me of something else unusual which occurred. Shortly after they continued on their journey, there was suddenly a huge glow of bluish-white light that lit up the hills in front of the car. The glow lasted for up to ten seconds before dying away. Janice felt it was linked to the object which they had seen but because Katie was frightened she did not tell her about it.
A Related Sighting?
In June 2008, Dr Simon Griffey saw mysterious lights over the Brecon Beacons. His reported sighting has numerous similarities with what Katie and Janice witnessed. Below is the article that appeared in The Sun on 27th June 08 including a photograph:

A baffled university don who spotted a UFO over the Brecon Beacons last night said: "There is no logical explanation." Dr Simon Griffey saw lights loom over a mountain village - before they disappeared. His close encounter is the third reported in the space of just five days, following sightings by the Army and police. Simon, a doctor of psychology at Cardiff University, said: "I've had loads of theories proposed by friends and neighbours but none of them add up." Dr Griffey, 50, and his son Jack, 23, were driving near Llangynidr Mountain in the Brecon Beacons, Powys, when they spotted lights over Talybont-on-Usk.
He said: "There was no noise whatsoever, it was a bit eerie. I've driven over this mountain for 17 years and have never seen anything like it. There were seven lights and having read the description from the soldiers in Shropshire, there are some similarities. They were the same sort of colour and the same spherical shape that they reported. I know I wasn't seeing things because Jack saw exactly the same as I did - and two other cars pulled over to look."
Sceptics have suggested the sightings could be huge man-made lanterns floating into the sky. But the boffin, of Llangynidr, said: "It was too big. It was way above the horizon and stayed there for 15 minutes. It was a bit smaller than a full moon - quite big and high up." Jack recorded the phenomenon on his mobile phone - but when they examined the pictures later, they found only three of the seven lights showed up.
Conclusions
To this day, both witnesses are convinced that the object they saw was definitely not a conventional aircraft or helicopter of any kind. The arrangement and number of lights on the object, and the way that they were changing colours seem to suggest something very unusual. Janice and Katie both mentioned independently that the object was very large and disc-shaped even though the main body of it could not be made out. Also the object was completely silent even when it approached, and it seemed to be able to move or hover still in the air at will.
The area of the Brecon Beacons is used for military training and often jets are flown over it. Could the object have been a secret advanced aircraft of some kind? This is a possibility, but if this were the case then why did it appear to be following the witness's car as if interested in it? Surely the pilots would have wanted to keep such a craft away from the eyes of the public?
The glowing light that lit up the hillside shortly after the sighting of the UFO is also very interesting. The only natural thing which could possibly account for such a sight would be sheet lightning. However Janice said that it stayed visible far too long for it to have been this. Also the weather was clear and it only occured once so it seems very unlikely that this would have been the cause. In all the years since the years since the incident, Janice has never seen anything else like it, even though she has driven over the Brecon Beacons many times.

TOP 10 UFO CASES IDENTIFIED BY MUFON'S SCIENCE REVIEW BOARD
A record number of UFO sightings were reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in 2012. Sightings reports increased from 5,650 in 2011 to 7,290 in 2012 - a 29 percent increase. MUFON employs trained field investigators with backgrounds in science and law enforcement that interview witnesses to "identify" UFOs. Although most of the reports are identified as known celestial objects, aircraft, meteors, etc., there are always a small percentage of the cases that remain as true "UFOs." These latter cases are carefully reviewed by a science board. MUFON's recently formed Science Review Board (SRB) consists of scientists with degrees in physics, chemistry, geology and electrical engineering. Their work experience includes NASA, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Advanced Mico Devices, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and France's national space program, CNES. The SRB has reviewed the best cases from the year 2012 and have identified the strongest 10 cases that cannot be identified as any known object. These 10 cases include triangular craft that became translucent, a circular sphere that flew alongside a private aircraft and disrupted its electrical system, a pentagon-shaped craft that hovered over an automobile and the classic saucer-shaped craft that swayed from side-to-side. As the object approached their right wing, the plane temporarily lost power. The engine sputtered and all of the electrical equipment including the computers turned off. The pilots estimate that the object came within 50 feet of their right wing. A few seconds later, the plane regained all systems as the UFO swiftly shot away at an incredible speed. "I've never in my life seen anything like this happen. It was very unexpected because we did not see the vehicle [UFO] approach. The vehicle was about 30 feet in diameter which glowed and may actually have had some solid shape beneath the energy. What I could observe on the surface seemed to have some circular, swirling energy force which surrounded something I believe operated it from within." Both witnesses have extensive flying experience. One witness is a manager and the other is an executive with a master's degree in economics. Neither had reason to falsify their report.
CASE 36765: 3 A.M., MARCH 25, 2012; AT A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY NEAR CLEBURNE, TEXAS
"Caption: Drawing of the object made by the witness. Date on the drawing is incorrect. It should read March 25 not March 24." Cleburne is approximately 25 miles south of downtown Fort Worth. Two officers on duty at a correctional facility saw a triangular object to their south. It was a clear night and the moon was not out. The object flew over them very slowly, appearing to be going only about 5 mph. The primary witness said that as they walked through the parking lot the lights over them turned on. The object then sped up and was gone to the north in a second. He said he was looking directly at the object when it sped up. The witness believed the object was around 4,000 to 6,000 feet high and about a 1,000-foot distance from him. The witness said there was also a Joshua city police officer that came to the facility and said his dispatcher indicated there were several people who had called in reporting suspicious activity in the skies. The witness said the lights on the object were white and not bright, but dim and in a series of circles. The object was triangular-shaped and the surface was dark. The object made no sound as it moved very slowly in the sky. He described it as slipping through the sky. He said it appeared to jerk as it moved like it was jumping from one location to another as it sped up.
CASE 41298: IN MID-JUNE 2012; NEAR SUTTER, CALIFORNIA (RURAL AREA 40 MILES NNW OF SACRAMENTO A security guard was traveling to a construction site to relieve another officer near a levee off McClatchy Road west of Yuba City when he noticed a glowing white light amongst the trees. As he continued in the direction toward the light he continued to observe it until he came within about 650 yards of the object. He stepped out of his vehicle and observed the object with 10 x 50 binoculars and then his night vision scope to the WSW of his position. During the five minutes that he observed the object he noted its saucer-like shape as it glided a few feet above the tree line. It swayed from side-to-side as it slowly moved and continued to sway from side-to-side even as it hovered. The object would sometimes drop below the tree line and then back up as if it was doing a search. Based on the angular displacement of the object in the sky, it would have been between 50-100 feet across. The entire object glowed white and there were three flashing exterior lights that were blue, green and red. The craft emitted sufficient light that the security guard could determine its closeness to the trees because of the craft's light illuminating the tree tops. The officer took a phone with a 2-3 megapixel camera, but the object was too far away to see anything but a bright dot on the camera. The officer then drove to the levee to get his partner so that he could see the object, but when they returned the object was gone.
The witness is a 35-year-old security guard who has had law enforcement training and served in the army.
CASE 41289: 10:15 P.M., JULY 13, 2012; RURAL AREA NEAR HARTFORD, WISCONSIN; 30 MILES NW OF MILWAUKEE A mother in rural Wisconsin was standing in her driveway on the north side of her house saying goodnight to her daughter who was in the driver's seat of her minivan with her 4-year-old son in the rear seat. Looking south from the minivan, the daughter could see the front of the house and the sky above, while the mother was facing north with her back to the house. The daughter saw something above the garage roof, stretching from the chimney on the house to a tree about 75 feet away. She stopped in mid-sentence and said, "Mom, what is that?" The mother ran to the east corner of the house so that she could see the object. Meanwhile, the daughter quickly got out of the van and the two women ran around the east side of the house to the backyard. In that time, the object had moved 200 feet south from the mother's house and yard and could be seen behind a line of 100-foot-tall trees moving slowly west to east. Both women described the object as huge, big enough to cover the 150-foot-wide property, shaped like a lampshade or a cone with its top lopped off. It had a distinct outline and was brilliant white. The bottom of the object appeared to have a curved convex bulge to it, and there was a row of bright red lights along the lower edge of the object. The daughter saw the red lights "racing" in sequence, while the mother described them as "flashing." Both women described several rows of brilliant, white lights ringing the sloping sides of the object, as brilliant as the lights in a stadium. The craft made no noise as it moved slowly over the neighbor's property to the east, then accelerated. By the time the women ran to a space between two trees to see where the object was going, it already seemed to be several miles away and over Waukesha County. Then suddenly the red and white lights went out and the object disappeared into the night sky. The entire sighting lasted about 25 seconds.
CASE 41918: 5:20 A.M., JULY 14, 2012; HIGHWAY 36 NEAR THE TOWN OF MILANO, TEXAS, AND A REPEAT EVENT SIX MONTHS LATER NEAR THE SAME LOCATION " At about 5:20 a.m. on July 14, 2012, two men were traveling northwest on Highway 36 and had just passed through the small town of Milano, Texas. The two witnesses saw a pentagon-shaped, black object hovering over the highway ahead of them. At each apex of the pentagon were lights and a more intense light in the middle of the object. The lights at the corners were white and pulsated about once per second. As the witnesses drove under the object they could hear no sound coming from the craft above them. The witnesses saw what they thought were panel lines or vents on the underside of the craft. They estimated that the object was 30 feet above them when they passed under it and the object was about 20-30 feet across. The driver did not want to stop and the two men continued onto their destination.
The primary witness has a BS in chemistry and is working on a master's of science degree. The other witness, who was driving, has some college training.
It is interesting that a very similar case occurred on this same stretch of highway but six miles farther northwest and six months later, on December 20, 2012. A 35-year-old female and her 16-year-old son were traveling in the same direction on the same road. The witness stated that she and her son first saw the object approach their vehicle from the east. She described the object as about 100 feet across with five sides and flashing lights on each corner. The color of the craft was a dull gray. The craft moved back to the east out of sight. She stated that it came back and hovered directly above their SUV. The witness stated that both she and her son felt threatened by the object. Her anxiety is best described in her own words, "We continued to watch it when suddenly it was RIGHT UP ABOVE our SUV! There are few words that will effectively relay to anyone that wasn't there just how large and utterly surreal looking this thing was. I was in shock and as a mother I became fearful this thing could be a potential threat considering how close it was. So I stepped on the gas to get away from it." At this point the son began to video the object with his cell phone camera. It was too far away at that point to see any detail but it was clear from the voices that the mother was fearful.
CASES 37562, 37585 AND 36704, APRIL 17-19, 2012; THREE SEPARATE TRIANGLE REPORTS IN THE SAME REGION OF OKLAHOMA AND TEXAS
Three different reports of the same type object occurred in the areas of Tulsa and Oklahoma City as well as just across the Oklahoma-Texas border in Van Alstyne, Texas. All three witnesses described a silent, triangular object that displayed white lights on the apex of the triangle and a ruby-colored light in the center of the triangle. There was not sufficient information in the movement of the object to establish that it was not potentially a drone or experimental aircraft. One of the witnesses was an individual working on drone aircraft at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. The individual was familiar with the triangular aircraft being used at Tinker AFB and did not believe the object he saw was a known drone because it was hovering in a stationary position and was completely silent.
Unlike the triangular object seen in March in Cleburne, Texas, these objects did not produce any type of movement that could not be explained by a new type of drone such as the X47-B or other experimental aircraft. The most likely explanation is that the military has developed a completely silent triangular aircraft that may be able to move at very slow speeds.
CASE 38312: 9 P.M., MAY 19, 2012; LAWRENCEVILLE, GEORGIA; (RURAL PROPERTY ABOUT 30 MILES NE OF ATLANTA). The witness in rural Georgia reported that on May 19, 2012, at approximately 9 p.m. she and four other family members observed nine bright objects pulsating or throbbing deep orange to light orange, each about the size of the full moon, moving ENE to SSW at near treetop level, hovering just above the trees in her backyard at a height of 500 feet to one mile, and then shooting upward into the sky one after another at a 45-degree angle and at an extreme rate of speed. It took each object only 1-2 seconds to disappear from view as it accelerated. One of the witnesses described the movement as, "...the only thing you could see is a streak..." A total of nine objects were seen to make this same pattern of hovering and then rapidly accelerating. Two days later the witnesses observed several helicopters of military design flying and hovering very low over their property. The military helicopters were seen around noon for the next three days. The helicopters were dark, flat-black, unmarked and very, very loud. As one witness stated, "The first time I saw it [the helicopter] he was just over the trees; as he was coming over he paused and he tilted the helicopter towards me and he physically did a buzz around me." The witnesses took videos of the helicopters on May 22.
The witnesses are all credible. One has a college degree and is a nurse at a local medical facility. Another is a retired automotive executive. Two of the other witnesses are currently enrolled in college courses. The fifth witness is retired.
CASE 41616: 10:30 P.M., JULY 18, 2012; CHANNAHON, ILLINOIS; A SMALL SUBURB 35 MILES SE OF CHICAGO
This report comes from a 50-year-old male. It is best told in his own words. "I tend to sit outside once my wife turns in for the night. I sit and enjoy a cigar, read something, have a cold beer and let the dog do her business. I do this every night and on clear days I also take my small binoculars out and watch the stars, planets and the moon. I've witnessed meteors streak across the sky. I've watched satellites slowly move across the night sky. I've watched countless airplanes and helicopters, be they civilian, military, commercial, etc. in the sky over my home throughout the years but I NEVER witnessed anything of the type I witnessed on the night of July 18th, 2012. "I was out in my backyard around 10:30 p.m. having a cigar and waiting for my small dog to finish her 'ritual.' My wife and I have a large, handheld floodlight we take with us to check for skunks before we allow the dogs out. On the night in question, I was standing approximately 20 feet from my porch so the sensor on the porch light timed out. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and I looked up and thought I saw movement coming from the Ursa Minor Constellation. It seemed as though one of the stars was moving in a northerly direction. I thought it might be a satellite so I paid it no mind until it 'stopped' moving and seemed to blink. As I watched it for a few seconds it seemed as though the 'air' around the 'star' seemed to ripple sort of the same way heat does when watching it rise from the ground at a distance. It was then that I noticed it 'moving' again and thought it odd as the stars that make up the Constellation of Ursa Minor don't MOVE! So I shined the flood light at the 'star' that was moving and that's when I realized I was watching something very strange. It seemed to 'absorb' the light. It reminded me of the way water moves when a pebble is dropped and ripples. As I shined the light on it, it actually seemed to respond. It shined a light back at me! At first I thought it an optical illusion but when I did it a second time, and blinked the light several times, it repeated the sequence I had just done! This 'THING' was massive! Made no noise and moved very slow across the sky. It blocked out the stars for a few moments that I shined the light at it as if to let me know it was actually there. I know that sounds silly but that's what happened. I watched it slowly fade as if 'cloaking' again but I could make out the shape as it seemed to blink in and out as it moved. I lost sight of it as the tress blocked my view of it."
CASE 43607: 4 P.M., OCTOBER 23, 2012; BALL GROUND, GEORGIA; A TOWN OF ABOUT 1400 PEOPLE
Two women and their two children saw a silent, black object that hovered almost directly over their home at a height of several hundred feet. The duration of the incident was about 30 minutes. Three short videos of the object were provided by the witness.
The videos show a somewhat circular object with lights that periodically flashed around its perimeter. This object is not yet identified and the videos are currently being studied.
CASE 44556: 8:15 P.M., DECEMBER 13, 2012; CENTRAL GEORGIA ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM DUBLIN
At approximately 8:15 p.m. on December 13, 2012, the witness and a companion were traveling west on I-16 just west of Dublin, Georgia, when he observed a saucer-like craft approach his truck at treetop height from the right (north) shoulder of the interstate. The object slowly approached the witness' vehicle and hovered for a few seconds and then disappeared. The object was about 30 feet in diameter, had eight white lights around the underside perimeter and one white light, equal in size of those on the perimeter, in the center. The lights did not appear to illuminate the ground, only the object itself. The entire encounter lasted less than one minute with the object coming within 100 feet of the vehicle.
The object had smooth, easy movements like it was tracking his vehicle, which was traveling down a major interstate highway about 70 mph. The object moved toward the truck and, once it was directly overhead, the witness lost sight of it, although he did not see where the object went once it was directly overhead. The object seemed to be less than 100 feet high when the witness lost sight of it. The object had the look of spun aluminum, not shiny. It flew from east to west over the westbound lane of I-16. The entire incident lasted less than a minute.
The investigator was only able to talk to the driver as the second witness refused to talk about the sighting saying that it was too upsetting. The primary witness insisted that there were many other witnesses to this event but as of this date, no other witnesses have come forth.

Two decades ago, the area around the Florida Panhandle town of Gulf Breeze was the center of sightings of unidentified flying objects, byline Dusty Ricketts.
County Commissioner John Broxson saw something in Gulf Breeze in 1987:
Something bright was hovering above his home, a parade of lights of different colors and intensity. He quickly had his wife, Christina, and their friends come out to see it for themselves. No one knew what they were watching.
The unidentified flying object hovered for several moments before quickly flying straight until it was out of sight.
As the article points out, Ed Walters wasn't the only witness to the UFO sightings. Hundreds of witnesses saw these things.
Between 1987 and the end of 1993, when most of the sightings ended, Ware said hundreds of people reported seeing UFOs in Gulf Breeze. Walters and others took more than 125 photographs of supposed UFOs just between Nov. 11, 1987, and May 1, 1988, Ware said.
The distraction of "proving" or debunking Walters, from his character to the model of a flying saucer found in his home, doesn't address the real issues surrounding the Gulf Breeze events.
Walters described weird beeping, electronic type noises coming from one of the robotic type "aliens" he saw. It reminds me of older cases in many ways; of humanoids and robotic beings, of Mothman type electronic sounds. In other weird events, like some Hairy Biped encounters, strange beeping or electronic sounds occur.
As already mentioned; hundreds of witnesses observed UFOs in the area at the time.
Many of the images Walters took of the UFOs are similar to the clunky flying saucers from the 1950s, like Adamski's images.

The paper model of the UFO found in Walter's home after he moved out seems ridiculous; why leave such damning evidence behind? Why stick it where it wouldn't be easily found, yet found it was?
Then there was the strange story that appeared in the news around the same time; something about three (if I remember it right) G.I.'s who went "crazy," and talked about UFOs, among other things. There was a Gulf Breeze connection there; I don't know if they were from Gulf Breeze, or went there on a "mission" listening to some voice they heard, or what. I tried to find some links to this but didn't find anything. (Plus, I was in a hurry.) If anyone recognizes what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate the info.
As far as hoaxes go, the article quotes Barry Karr, Director of CSI (formerly CSICOP) who supports the late Philip Klass's belief Gulf Breeze sightings were a hoax:
'I really don't think there's any question the Gulf Breeze sightings were a hoax,' Karr said.`There are things in the sky that can't be identified, especially near an air base. Just because it can't be identified doesn't mean it's a visitor from another planet.'
This is typical chronic skeptic disingenuousness; while it's true that it's an assumption, and only an assumption, that these UFOs and entities are extraterrestrial, there's still a whole lot of strange things going on that validate investigation.
(I also wonder at Karr's syntax: he says "there's (no) question the Gulf Breeze sightings were a hoax," which implies intentional deception, but in the same breath says "There are things in the sky that can't be identified, especially near an air base. Just because it can't be identified doesn't mean it's a visitor from another planet.'
Which is it, a hoax, or misidentifications, or misperceptions, of military craft? It's as if Karr is trying to cover all bases; hoax, assumptions, misinterpretations/misidentifications -- it's all bunk, no matter the reason. Just dazzle them with blanket dismissal and move on.)
Personally, I think the entire Gulf Breeze events were military experiments on an entire town, and Ed Walters was their prime guinea pig. If this is true, it's almost as astounding as entities from outer space. To brush the thing off as mere lights in the sky that can't be identified ignores this possibility.

Theres a new player in the UFO hunt, though it remains to be seen whether this show will be a perennial player, or if its just a flash in the pan (I.E. a pilot that doesnt pan out -- Disc. seems to be showing a lot of "one shots" in their Monday night time slot right now). This episode looks at a spate of recent (spring and summer 2008) sightings in Pensylvania. After interviewing a number of witnesses, the investigators -- all members of MUFON (the Mutual UFO Network) -- narrow their focus to two witnesses. One is a retiree, who seems very credible and has no obvious reason to make up his two sightings, and the other is a woman who claims both multiple sightings and to have pictures of the alleged UFO. Unfortunately, the first witness has no actual proof, just a compelling story. So the MUFON folks recreate his sighting using their CGI equipment, and filddle with the simulation until the witness approves the octagonal-shaped craft and the sighting conditions.
The woman witness proves both more interesting and problematic. Her picture evidence is unimpressive (the usual blurred lights), and one image even seems to match up to the position of the moon and Jupiter on the night in question. Additionally, she claims to have seen some kind of glittering dust falling from the UFO into one of the trees in her yard, only to have the dust then return to the UFO. Despite claiming that this phenomnon lasted 20 minutes, she has no photos. The group takes cuttings from the tree and sends them to a scientist, who claims that the tree was subjected to radiation which caused mutation in the leaves. Fortunately (for science), the group then sends the sample to another expert, who says the first expert is totally wrong; there is no evidence of either radiation or mutation. I was impressed by this, as most shows of this kind consistently fail to get a second opinion -- prefering to go with the most sensational finding (and dubious expert) possible. The group also re-creates the womans sighting, and she is very moved by the compupter-generated recreation. This makes the group believe that she is sincere, though they retain some skepticism about her report. This would be my only reservation about this episode -- that they give a witness more leeway than perhaps they should. (To me, at least, the dust part of her sighting seems more like a waking dream.) Fortunately, the MUFON folks make up for this lapse of "toughness" in the Mexico show. (See following review.)
This show is to MUFON what "UFO Hunters" is to" UFO Magazine" -- that is, the program seems to be built around the people in the group and their interests. And I have to say, from what Ive seen so far, I find this show much more interesting. Where "UFO Hunters" (the History Channel one, not the SciFi series which had one show and then disappeared -- seemingly for good) is built around UFO mythology and "investigating" classic sightings -- nearly all of which seem to be more than 20 years old. This show is tackling sightings that are current (2008 as this is written). I find the immediacy much more compelling. The witnesses have had less time to become "set" in their stories, or to forget or embelish details. (Though, as regular readers know, I dont put a lot of stock in witness reports; see the review of "Unsolved History: Roswell" - a.k.a. "UFOs Over America "for a scientific study of witness memory.) Also, the MUFON crew seems much more interested in finding out whats really happening than in building the UFO mythology. In the Mexico show (see review), they even state this goal specifically. So far, Im favorably impressed. The "crew" may not be as flashy and memorable as "UFO Hunters" or "Ghost Hunters", but theyre serious about their work and asking the hard questions that "UFO Hunters" -- for one -- seldom wants to ask.

"Most of the Saturnian satellites -- Titan's siblings -- have thousands and thousands of craters on their surface. So far on Titan, of the 50 percent of the surface that we've seen in high resolution, we've only found about 60 craters," said Catherine Neish, a Cassini radar team associate based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. "It's possible that there are many more craters on Titan, but they are not visible from space because they are so eroded. We typically estimate the age of a planet's surface by counting the number of craters on it (more craters means an older surface). But if processes like stream erosion or drifting sand dunes are filling them in, it's possible that the surface is much older that it appears."
"This research is the first quantitative estimate of how much the weather on Titan has modified its surface," adds Neish.
Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere, and the only world besides Earth known to have lakes and seas on its surface. However, with a frigid surface temperature of around minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit (94 kelvins), the rain that falls from Titan's skies is not water but instead liquid methane and ethane, compounds that are normally gases on Earth.
Neish and her team made the discovery by comparing craters on Titan to craters on Jupiter's moon Ganymede. Ganymede is a giant moon with a water ice crust, similar to Titan, so craters on the two moons should have similar shapes. However, Ganymede has almost no atmosphere and thus no wind or rain to erode its surface.
"We found that craters on Titan were on average hundreds of yards (meters) shallower than similarly sized craters on Ganymede, suggesting that some process on Titan is filling its craters," says Neish, who is lead author of a paper about this research published online in the journal Icarus Dec. 3, 2012.
The team used the average depth-versus-diameter trend for craters on Ganymede derived from stereo images from NASA's Galileo spacecraft. The same trend for craters on Titan was calculated using estimates of the crater depth from data derived from images made by Cassini's radar instrument.
Titan's atmosphere is mostly nitrogen with a trace of methane and other, more complex molecules made of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons). The source of Titan's methane remains a mystery because methane in the atmosphere is broken down over relatively short timescales by sunlight. Fragments of methane molecules then recombine into more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere, forming a thick, orange smog that hides the surface from view. Some of the larger particles eventually rain out on to the surface, where they appear to get bound together to form the sand.
"Since the sand appears to be produced from the atmospheric methane, Titan must have had methane in its atmosphere for at least several hundred million years in order to fill craters to the levels we are seeing," says Neish. However, researchers estimate Titan's current supply of methane should be broken down by sunlight within tens of millions of years, so Titan either had a lot more methane in the past, or it is being replenished somehow.
Team members say it's possible that other processes could be filling the craters on Titan: erosion from the flow of liquid methane and ethane for example. However, this type of weathering tends to fill a crater quickly at first, then more slowly as the crater rim gets worn down and less steep. If liquid erosion were primarily responsible for the infill, then the team would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan. "However, this is not the case," says Neish. "Instead we see craters at all stages; some just beginning to be filled in, some halfway, and some that are almost completely full. This suggests a process like windblown sand, which fills craters and other features at a steady rate."
All solid materials under stress flow very slowly over time. This is called viscous flow, and it is like what happens when someone takes a scoop out of a fresh tub of whipped cream -- the material slowly flows in to fill the hole and flatten the surface. Craters on icy satellites tend to get shallower over time as the ice flows viscously, so it's possible that some of the shallow craters on Titan are simply much older or experienced a higher heat flow than the similarly sized, fresh craters on Ganymede studied in this work.
However, Titan's crust is mostly water ice, and at the extremely low temperatures on Titan, ice shouldn't flow enough to account for such a large difference in depth compared to the Ganymede craters, according to the team. Also, just like stream erosion, deformation from viscous flow tends to happen rapidly at first, then more slowly as the material adjusts, so one would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan if its surface was deforming easily through viscous flow.
As Cassini flies past Titan on its multi-year tour of Saturn and its moons, the radar instrument gradually builds up a map of the surface. To date, the instrument has provided data in strips covering approximately 50 percent of Titan's surface. The craters measured by the team are all within about 30 degrees of the equator, a relatively dry region on Titan.
"However, the presence of liquids on the surface and in the near subsurface can also cause extensive modification to crater shape, as is observed on Earth," says Neish. "In the case of Titan, liquids consist of hydrocarbons, either as wet sediments (such as those observed at the Huygens landing site) or shallow marine environments (such as the lakes observed at the north and south poles). Craters formed in similar environments on Earth lack any significant surface topography, including the absence of a raised rim, as wet sediments slump into the crater. It is possible that the lack of topography associated with marine-target impacts may help to explain the relative scarcity of impact craters observed near the poles of Titan. If Titan's polar regions are saturated by liquid hydrocarbons, craters formed in those regions may lack any recognizable topographic expression."
The team thinks these considerations are good areas for more research, but based on the data so far, the difference in depth between craters on Titan and Ganymede is best explained by filling from windblown sand, although erosion from liquids and viscous flow might contribute to the modification of Titan's craters.
NASA's Cassini mission, managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., and the NASA Postdoctoral Program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, funded the research.

UFO mystery solved Lanre Bakare 16/ 8/2008 THE Stretford UFO sighting has been solved and apparently it was no more than a lot of hot air!Bright orange lights appeared above Stretford on Thursday night, sparking speculation that extra terrestrials had come to Manchester. But, according to a witness, the truth is that they were lanterns made by children out of bin bags and candles. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "We saw the lanterns coming out of a garden off Bradfield Road at about half six. There was a group of three lads letting them off and three more riding on bikes to see how far they were going. They were laughing at all the people staring."Police were called to investigate the lights and hundreds of people have since logged onto this website to see the objects floating over Stretford. The sightings follow a Ministry of Defence report which revealed two UFO sightings last year in Chorlton and Irlam. Stephen Mera, founder of the Manchester Association of Paranormal Investigators and Training,said: "There are usually between 80 and 90 sightings a year and the vast majority of them are these lanterns or balloons. They only cost around lb3 and can be set off within minutes of being bought." This year has been an unusually large number of sightings with more than 150 UFOs reported. Only around 4 per cent turn out to be unexplainable. Some witnesses claimed the UFOs were too big to be lanterns and disappeared in an instant but Mr Mera has a theory. He said: "It's very hard to judge how big something is in the sky because there is nothing to compare things with. As for the disappearing, the lantern more than likely just went behind low cloud cover rather than vanish into thin air."According to Mr Mera, the lanterns have been set off all summer and Thursday's `UFOs' were the results of a particularly successful launch.He said: "I think we'll see more of these throughout the summer. It's not the first time and it certainly won't be the last."
