For my part, I only remember Dad pointing excitedly up into the sky at something I never saw myself, actually. Still, the occasion was enough to provoke energy and excitement from my High School Principal Grandfather, Alfred Senior, who exploded abruptly and clumsily from his bath in the commotion!
"Grandy" would stumble outside shoeless, only towel-clad and still dripping, to see! My grandmother Suzi was upset and beside herself, and I remember my mother Twyla looking up into the sky uncharacteristically slack-jawed and incredulous... truly astonished!
I looked and looked! Nothing!
Later that evening, and in the exuberating wake of this strange commotion at our home, the conversation among the adults ran rife with discussion and conjecture about the unknown, the outr'e, and the infinita cosmica-galactica. Heady stuff for any mind; assuredly my own. I soaked up all this "highly strange" like a young sponge.
Indeed, I was profoundly moved by thoughts which had never before entered my young imagination and having entered would change me, forever, ever after. See, the attitudes and reflections of my parents and grandparents that night were such that while they didn't remotely know what the UFOs were... their aggregate educated experience, coupled with news of the huge flap going on at the time, was that the UFOs were happening, not "us," and not from "here"...
Also? Whatever they were and whatever they were about? They were about 200 times neater than Christmas! Yes, reader, Christmas... beyond the usual disappointment of presents opened gleefully the following morning, you know? Christmas actualized as a night when anything could happen beyond some errant religious implication! Christmas as a shared joy, increased! Christmas as that time when wishes become horses so beggars could ride! Christmas as a new beginning!
Oversimplified? Perhaps. Still, it was like that. UFOs were somehow harbingers of the future opening before me like a wondrous flower.
I finally went to restless sleep that night, at last. I dreamed of spaceships, alien beings, and magical technologies! I had been opened like a box of limited cognition to a startling new appreciation for the length, breadth, and surface area implied by an infinite universe, reader! This was my self-actualization. I was never, really, the same again.
The next day we were to discover that the lights my parents saw were misidentified searchlights from the nearby Ridgefield Fairgrounds reflecting off a bank of low clouds.
That's right. Though, cool your jets.
Cause for disappointment and an intellectual reversal? Not at all! Sincerely! So fret not, reader, as it matters not.
The *damage* was already done. I pause to laugh.
See... with regard to UFOs? Grok this: it's not the single case which disproves the actuality of same. It is; however, the single case which proves that actuality to which I allude!
Does the reader think that out of all the many thousands of reported incursions by UFOs into human affairs... forgetting the reported human interactions with UFOs throughout a hoary human history......that there is not that one true UFO case? A case entirely trumping, by the way, any number of hoaxes and misidentifications? Think about that. Let it further coil your short and curlies.
Dad and Grandy made it quite clear. All you need, along with love? All you need is one. Da ta, da ta da... All you need is one......One is all you need... One is all you need... One is all you need...
...Flash forward 40 years to 1994.
I was two years into a bachelor of science program at a local Alabama university. College was engaged immediately after the completion of a 23 year career as a military aviation officer, combat flyer, aviation training officer, and for a limited time, even a service school commandant. I was at the aforementioned university to secure a teaching credential, ultimately achieving same Summa Cum Laude. I mention the preceding only to reassure the reader's credulity. I've some measure of credibility... I digress...
During Fall term, on one very odd and singular route to class I'd never taken before or would ever take again -readers can make of that what they will- I chanced to look at an adjacent bulletin board while enroute. There affixed I noticed a small text-sign from one of the Frats reporting on an unknown-to-me-at-that-point Robert Hastings they were hosting... there to give a special lecture that very night.
The subject was UFOs.
Inexplicably, I was immediately returned to that magic minority of my years 40 plus summers passed, its hot summer nights, fireflies, and those same conjectured UFOs. There was no equivocation. I had to go.
I'd have to cut Dr. Petry's philosophy of education class to get there, an important one much enjoyed, but it seemed a small price to pay. That night I was in attendance at Mr. Hastings' lecture.
Arriving early, the Troy University auditorium was, somewhat surprisingly, packed; the atmosphere was rife with an expectation not all my own. Unabashedly, I was a boy, again, and beside myself with anticipation.
I thought I knew what to expect, but was surprised regardless. On the stage behind a cheap podium and a university slide projector stood a nicely bearded, well spoken & entirely rational gentleman. He was obviously an educated person, about my age, and dressed in a suit and tie. Startlingly, he began selling naught but well supported if astounding ideas, and those for free. Hastings' talk was astonishing if the listener was paying attention. I paid attention. Verily, reader. Robert Hastings was an abundant spark. Myself, a genuine truth-seeker of some sincerity and well into a majority becoming increasingly askance and akimbo with conventional wisdoms? I was the driest tender.
Began then (a result of Hastings' spark), my own researches and inquiries into this most important story errantly loath to be told. Why? I would know even as it ultimately cost me that second career as a public school teacher:

In twelve years my interest in UFOs translated into some small notoriety included in a Ufological "community" of *truth-seekers* and... uh,...other persons. That community is a world-wide, highly connected, supremely educated community, and it is awash with talented persons on both sides of one very contentious aisle... succinctly dividing those with real intellectual courage and those without? That's this writer's take...
Anyway...
The result of a small memoir written in the honor of Mr. Hastings over at UFO UpDates -for his auspicious kindling of my altogether enjoyable (if costly?) ufological conflagration- Mr. Hastings shot me an E-mail of kind appreciation and queried if I might be interested in what he was up to lately...
Of course, the reader will have heard the metaphor regarding that feral ursine defecating copiously beneath a leafy canopy... I would be most interested, of course, to the point of extreme prejudice!
We began our communication with a few E-mails leading to an agreed upon time for a phone call. Cue the Spielberg/Williams collaboration "Close Encounter" music. Yes. It was that kind of interview.
...Damned if my *blaze* isn't booted to a new energy level!
Consider, reader. Everyone has heard the *official* gloss on the subject of UFOs...
"UFOs are intriguing, yes, in a distractedly academic sort of way," errant and conflicted *officials* parrot (and I paraphrase), "...but in the *final* analysis, no credible evidence exists to support a UFO conjecture to begin with, and in the second place, however UFOs are manifested as some kind of new"aerial phenomena"... they are in no way a threat to national security. UFOs, then, can safely be put beneath concern, consideration, and contempt..."
Excuse me? Be not fooled, reader. This is scientific reductionism at its absolute worst! Verily, the preceding paragraph of accurate paraphrase is naught but the collected and then furiously hammered feces of a scurvy male bovine quadruped! BS, reader, and smelling as sweet!
In a preceding issue of UFO Magazine I iterated the researches of Frank Feschino and how they applied with regard to UFOs and a "...threat to national security..." Additionally, I've written effusively with regard to the impact of UFOs & National Security via contributions by Richard Dolan!
Ladies and Gentlemen! UFOs are an abundant and obvious threat to National Security... (which may be good news, still, for rank and file global inhabitants, I'm thinking)! A competent, sincere, and diligent jury is in, rendered its cogent verdict, and already left the courthouse to sell honorable books on Amazon.com!
See? The preceding is a song sung to the tune of what Project Bluebook top-kick Edward Ruppelt stealthily referred to as our Military's "many lurid duels with death." Think in terms of "ordered" conflicts involving our military with UFOs pursuant to a standing "Shoot-Down" order......translating into a huge material loss, the deaths of many battle-tested persons......and, at length, the selling and degradation of the aggregate American soul into a morass of secrecy without oversight!
There is no hyperbole, there is data however, for even sharper resolution to a single issue... so as to make the distinction for his contribution more visible in this single but very compelling area.

Seriously... back to the point... what high strangeness did happen at Malmstrom AFB, (...and nuclear missile facility!) Montana in 1966 and 1967? What bizarre occurrence transpired in 1975 at the same location? What completely inexplicable incident happened there in 1992? 1995? 1996? Yes, feel the hair start to rise up, chillingly, on the back of your neck, reader!
How about similar activities at F.E. Warren AFB (...and nuclear missile facility!) Wyoming in 1965? Ditto 1973 and 1974? Ditto 1980 and 1981? Let that further frost your incredulous cookie!

Robert Hastings' investigations reveal that real folks, quality people......vetted soldier/citizens... 18 persons of well scrutinized eminence in Hastings' aforementioned NICAP paper alone... were affected and effected by the highly strange reality our government denies and soft-soaps, in the aggregate, to this very day!
Further, let's pause a moment to consider. What are the effects of these duplicitous subterfuges from *officialdom*?
Consider, does not such indolently authoritarian sophistry as this only serve to discommode an abused citizenry? Does not the former only invalidate a government that makes itself further irrelevant? Does not this heinous egregiousness do naught but further wound the pioneer spirit and national soul of America? I think the reader appreciates, too, that just now is perhaps not the best time for those kinds of infidelities to further manifest themselves, eh?
...And further consider reader, whatever is occurring at Strategic Missile Commands all over the United States, our bases are either being mocked by something which renders them impotent and ineffective at the drop of a tin-foil hat... (let that sink in), or crazy people are in charge at these bases and have reigned supreme over a period of years! Neither prospect is acceptable to the reader, I know, even as I am challenged, myself, to be able to justify a rational third possibility. Indeed and still, nothing else seems to completely fit the facts.
Drawing to a close, why go to the trouble of getting to the bottom of this *thing* that by all accounts will cause us such trouble? Why mess with this bull? Why pick this scab? Why kick over this rock? Why obviate our inculcated ignorance and encourage disgust with same? Why should Hastings exacerbate a rebellion in this matter and of this magnitude?
Simple. Moreover, there are a multitude of reasons, actually. I add the reader likely knew them herself. I'll iterate just a few.
We do it for an intellectually solid place to put our individual feet down! We do it to improve the aggregate reach and total grasp of individuals! We do it because individuals are strengthened by the truth even as they are weakened by lies! We do it because individuals should have more respect for our children! We do it because individuals pay for the right to be able to make an informed consent! We do it because individuals should BE aware of what they can be MADE aware! We do it because individuals know they have to live in futures they themselves make to a degree! We do it, finally, because it is the future, and in the future what doesn't change... causes death... and ignobly dies itself!
I could go on. So could the reader, if the reader but reflects a moment.
Is truth better? Always.
That's what those "Matrix" films were all about, remember? Truth is better for you, those you love, and for the art we can produce living and breathing the clean free airs of an informed philosophy in an efficacious society! I don't overstate this.

RAF NAVIGATOR BELIEVES HE SAW ONE OF THE LAST OF THE LARGE DINOSAURS

"Chris Butler / Science Photo Library"Kent-based cryptozoological researcher Neil Arnold recently passed on to me, with kind permission from its source to publish it here, a remarkable, previously undocumented sea serpent sighting from the late 1950s. Neil's source was a correspond-ent called Nick (whose email address I have on file), and one of the eyewitnesses in question was his father. Nick is anxious that the sighting be preserved, so here is his account of it: "I am 39 years old with three children and my father is now 72. He was one of the last people to have been conscripted to national service, serving as navigator on RAF Shackleton aircraft in 1957, flying missions over Europe and much of South America. The official job of the Shackleton was as a spotting aircraft, and both pilot and crew were highly trained in this respect; their job was to search for submarines and relay the positions back to base. One of the tell-tale signs they used to look for [from] high above was a dark shape underwater, which could often be a shark or whale or other creature, but occasionally they would get lucky and find a submarine near to the surface. On one occasion, having seen such a dark shape near the surface, they flew down to investi-gate, and as they flew by this shape, every crew member on board saw the same thing - the neck and head of a large sea creature protruding from the surface. The nearest thing they could think of at the time was a plesiosaur. They were all in agreement but of course the pilot on the way home forbade them absolutely from talking about it; if they had done so they would all have been immed-iately grounded and accused of being drunk on duty. "So anyway, my father decided to research what the creature might have been, and found that it was almost definitely an 'elasmosaurus' [long-necked plesio-saur], as the one thing that was very obvious was the huge length of the animal's neck. My father was forced to conclude, and of course he'd read all about the coelacanth, that there were indeed much larger 'extinct' creatures out there, unknown to science. He told me of the incident when I reached adulthood. Twenty years on, he still will swear to his grave that this is what they all saw on the flight... "The year was 1957, the location was 'about 500 miles [800km] north of the Canary Islands, in open sea'. The RAF Squadron was 228 Squadron, flying out of St Eval in Cornwall. (This air base has since been closed, but I believe remnants of the site remain.) I don't know who the other crewmembers were and I have been thinking about making an official enquiry to the RAF archives. However, what I hope is important is the location (vague, sorry), species and date. I am more than aware that most scientists consider the poss-ibility of any large dinosaur [sic] still alive as astronomic-ally small, and my father himself also thinks now with sadness that he might have seen one of the last ones; his own reasoning is that at this point, not so long after the war, there really was not much shipping around; indeed, the area where they had the sighting was entirely devoid of shipping and maybe this was the reason the creature had considered it safe to surface, far from the throb of ships' propellers." One zoologist who read Nick's account suggested that perhaps they had seen a tentacle from a giant squid rise above the water surface, but Nick's father emphatic-ally discounted any such poss-ibility. "[One should note that a common explanation for sea monster reports is that they are mistaken views of a giant squid's tentacle sticking out of the water: against this we also hasve the expressed opinion that the giant squids DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT MUSCULAR STRENGTH in their boneless tentacles to be able to do such a thing as wave them around in the air well free of the water-Dale D.]"

The following are the peculiar circumstances, as far as our reporter has been able to learn them--for, in consequence of the opinion entertained concerning his relatives by the deceased, who was a man of considerable wealth and respectability, they have made great effort to keep the particulars from the public ear. It appears that nearly a year ago the deceased, who was fifty-three years of age, became strongly impressed with an idea that, when he should die, the parsimonious disposition of his relatives would lead them to put him in a cheap coffin, while he had a strong desire to be buried in one of polished rosewood, lined with white satin and trimmed with silver. Soon after this strange idea got possession of his mind, he discovered an elegant coffin in one of the principal warehouses, which suited him. He purchased it for 75; had it sent to his residence at nightfall, and stowed it away in a small closet adjoining his bed-room, where it remained until the time of the accident. How it occurred is not known to a certainty, for the first intimation the family had of the lamentable occurrence was from a servant, who, on going to call him to breakfast, found the door wide open and the deceased lying upon the floor, dead, with his coffin at his side. She screamed, which soon brought the family, and on raising the body the skull was found crushed in upon the brain. He was discovered about 8 o'clock yesterday morning, when, to all appearance, he had been dead several hours. On examining the closet, a bottle containing a quantity of sherry wine was found, and as Saturday night was excessively warm, he is supposed to have gone to the closet in order to procure the wine to use with some ice-water he had on a small table by his bedside. It is thought that he must have sought for it in the dark, and by some mistake upset the coffin, which stood nearly upright. Becoming sensible that it was falling, he probably made an effort to get away, when he fell, and the outer end struck his head with sufficient force to fracture his skull and cause almost immediate death. The inquest will be held with all possible secrecy. The unfortunate impression of the deceased concerning his relatives is a sufficient reason for withholding the names of the parties.

The FBI has quietly removed from its website a PDF collection of documentation on alleged cases of spontaneous human combustion. Instead, all you get now is a summary of the files in question.
Interestingly, the FBI has also begun to remove other Fortean files, and UFO-related data, from its site too.
For example, up until very recently - but no longer, sadly - you could also download in PDF format the FBI's 135-page surveillance file on Silas Newton, who was a key player in the legend of the alleged UFO crash at Aztec, New Mexico in March 1948.
Also: the FBI's 42-page file on Philip Corso, co-author with William Birnes of "The Day After Roswell", has been completely deleted from the FBI's site. All you get now is a name check listed in the "C" section of the Bureau's online research page.
The 179-page FBI surveillance file on maverick scientist and Aleister Crowley disciple Jack Parsons is no longer available; the 287-page file on scientific genius Nikola Tesla is completely gone; as is the 789-page collection on Wilhelm "cloud-buster" Reich.
Some of the FBI's files on weird phenomena - such as its UFO papers, its animal mutilation files, its MJ12 reports, and its Project Blue Book records - are still available.
But this recent deletion of what amounts to thousands of pages of "strange secrets" that the FBI had previously posted online in a handy, downloadable format is very curious indeed.
Of course, you can still get the files by filing a written request with the FBI; but that can take time, and for some of the larger files, it can cost significant amounts of money too.
Luckily, I downloaded all the now-missing files onto a CD some time ago...

Thinking that the two men could be caught in a lie that would expose a hoax the sheriff left the men together in a room with a hidden microphone after his initial interviews. Much to the surprise of law enforcement, the men did not reveal a hoax but instead had a conversation that just reinforced their claims. The story spread from local media to international wire services and was investigated by Dr. J. Allen Hynek and others. Detractors note that nearby security cameras should have seen the craft the men described but other witnesses have reported seeing the craft on the same night.
AN EVENING OF FISHING
Charles Hickson, 42, and Calvin Parker, 19, co-workers at a Pascagoula, Mississippi shipyard were fishing on the Pascagoula River on the evening of Thursday, October 11, 1973. Parker was the son of a close friend of Hickson's; he had only recently come to the area for a job at the shipyards and was staying with Hickson. At approximately seven o'clock in the evening, the two men heard a strange buzzing noise. They then turned around and saw an object hovering a few feet off the ground. It was an egg shaped craft about eight feet wide and ten feet across and some type of blue light associated. Some descriptions of the event indicate that the craft first appeared to merely be a blue light. According to an interview with Charles Hickson (quoted in the November, 1973 issue of Skylook) "one end just opened, and I saw three things coming out." The "things" were approximately five foot tall humanoids. The beings had hairless light gray skin, round feet and claw-like hands. Their mouths were slits and they did not appear to have any eyes. Three conical structures extended from their heads, one in the center front and two from the sides, much like nose and ears. They did not walk on the ground but floated up above it and towards the men. The legs of the aliens did not move and it is possible that they only had a single leg. The alien creatures approached the terrified fisherman and seized them. The alien seemed to somehow paralyze the men and then floated them back into the craft.
THE EXAMINATION
Despite the relatively small size of the craft as described by the men, inside they found themselves in separate rooms. Hickson believed that each was subjected to an examination with a strange mechanism which was vaguely reminiscent of a large eye as that is what he remembered. Parker, however, was so frighten he passed out and did not remember being onboard the craft. The large eye device, according to Hickson, was not painful or uncomfortable in any way. After approximately an hour the men were returned to the riverside. The craft simply rose up and disappeared.
Dumbfounded, confused and frightened the men left. They initially decided not to recount the story but eventually reconsidered, deciding that the military needed to know that this craft was in the area. They called the Keesler Air Force Base who then directed them to report the incident to the local sheriff. At approximately 10:30 PM the men arrived at the office of Jackson County Sheriff Fred Diamond. He did think that something had occurred because the men seemed shaken. Hickson had braced himself with whiskey after the incident, though, and the sheriff thought that the men might have been drinking. Diamond decided that he would leave the men in a room used to interview witnesses and suspects, which had concealed recording equipment. He believed that he may be able to learn the truth by listening to the men's private conversation. Instead, the conversation left him convinced that something strange had happened to the men.
INVESTIGATIONS AND AFTERMATH
Local coverage of the alleged alien abduction led to national and even international coverage. This apparently disturbed Hickson and Parker who had asked the sheriff to keep the incident quiet. The day after the abduction the sheriff warned them while at work that reporters were trying to find out more about the men and their story. The shipyard owner connected them with a lawyer who helped the men arrange for tests at the local hospital and then Keesler Air Force Base for further medical examinations and questioning by base officials. The men later parted company with the attorney.
In addition to reporters, the story attracted UFO investigators such as Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Although detractors would point out that area security cameras and toll booth personnel should have been able to see the craft, additional witnesses were uncovered. UFO reports were also found that occurred in the area in the days before the abduction. Hickson also passed a polygraph exam, although skeptics question the results because the examiner was fairly inexperienced.
Calvin Parker was apparently more shaken by the experience than Charles Hickson, who believed that his Korean War experiences left him better prepared for the shocking situation than his young friend. Although Parker has rarely spoke of the incident, Charles Hickson spoke at UFO conventions and wrote a book (with William Mendez) about the incident in 1983 called UFO Contact at Pascagoula. In the years since the abduction, a transcript that was allegedly from the Keesler Air Force Base interviews with the men has been discovered (May/June 1984 MUFON UFO Journal) as well as additional witnesses to the craft.
