Mass sightings of UFOs are always of great interest to researchers. It, once again, verifies that there are actual objects in the sky that a group of people not only saw, but were baffled by.
In 1966 in Wanaque, New Jersey, there was such an event.
You could not have gotten a better assortment of credible witnesses than ones such as police officers, councilmen, and even a mayor.
On the evening of January 11, 1966, a large luminous white light was seen over the reservoir. The color of the light changed from blue to green to red at different times. Even the shape of it was reported different at different moments from a cigar shape to a football shape to a simple sphere.
And, to make it even more ominous, people reported a beam of light coming down from the vessel (perhaps 500 to 1000 feet off the ground) to the ice-covered surface of the reservoir.
This photo (above) surfaced and was claimed to be taken there, but it has not been fully verified.
One officer who witnessed it noted that he saw what looked like a baseball shaped white light, and as he studied it, it turned red, hovered in the sky and made no sound. The mayor, having heard the officer's call, got in his car with his son and headed out toward the dam where they saw it moving over top of the iced reservoir and changing colors.
Calls came into the police station about the odd light. Citizens were pulled over, studying it and pointed it out to another officer. Then, someone called out that the bright light was going up and down and burning a hole into the ice.
NOTE: Although the first laser was designed in 1960, it was not something readily available, used or portable in 1966. In fact, it wasn't until 1969 that scientists shot a laser light to the moon to see its potential.
Interestingly, even the next day, there was a report of the light near the reservoir again, several miles away.
What happened in New Jersey in the mid 60s? It would seem a mass sighting of something unexplained that put off unusual lights and hovered over an icy lake where it shined a light down on it. We can't ever verify what it was at this point, but we can compare it to other incidents and see if there is a pattern. When I saw a triangular UFO with my family, I went around looking online for other reports of triangular UFOs in my area and the time they were seen. I started to see patterns of a period of time in the Southwest when they were being seen.
It seems extraordinary that this thing hovered so low and flashed lights and studied the surface of the frozen reservoir knowing they had to be seen. What was so important there? We can't even guess what a frozen body of water would mean to a potential alien ship or an unusual experimental craft, that they would risk detection.
What we do know, however, is that some very impressive witnesses and a lot of them saw this event as it unfolded and no clear answers were even given.

DERRICK DULA WAS SITTING ON THE PORCH OF HIS APARTMENT IN CARRBORO, NC THE NIGHT OF JAN. 26 WHEN HE SAW SOMETHING FLOATING IN THE SKY.
A few moments later, he decided that the floating object was, in fact, a UFO.
"At first my family just thought the object was a fireball, but when we stopped and pointed at it, the UFO literally froze in midair," Dula said.
Dula compared his UFO experience to something out of a "Star Wars" movie.
"The objects formed a triangle, then they all just vanished at the same time."
Dula said his sister-in-law, wife, kids, and neighbors also witnessed the UFO.
Dula's wife, Stacy Dula, said the experience lasted for 10 to 15 minutes.
"What are the chances of experiencing something like this?" she said.
Dula said his family was stunned by the experience.
"I have always been skeptical about UFOs, but after I went online and did some research, I realized several other people observed the same exact UFO that we did," said Dula. "I have no doubt that it was actually an unidentified flying object."
Sightings like Dula's have become increasingly common.

Peter Davenport, director of the National UFO Reporting Center, said there has been a dramatic increase in UFO reports since June.
"We have been absolutely inundated with reports lately," said Davenport.
"The center has received two to four times more than usual these past few months."
According to the National UFO Reporting Center's website, approximately 77,000 UFO sightings cumulatively have been reported from around the world.
More than 1,720 of these reports have come from North Carolina.
Davenport said he is worried the government is not doing enough to inform citizens about UFOs, and he questions whether the government is hiding information about UFOs from citizens.
"I would have to communicate with a UFO to know why there have been so many more reportings recently," said Davenport.
"But since I haven't had this type of communication yet, I unfortunately have no explanation for the increase."
Davenport has been the director of the center for 18 years, and he said he strongly believes thatUFOs are real.
He urges anyone who spots UFOs to report them to the center.
"We want to know as much information as possible," he said.

In reading the FOIA documents on the various CIA/DIA/NSA websites, you sometimes come across a reference to "PROJECT MOON DUST." I thought I'd take some time to see what I could track down on this Project for my own curiosity.
The June 1986 (number 8) issue of the "JUST CAUSE" Newsletter (click here) contained an item on Project Moon Dust. The article referred to work undertaken by researcher Robert Todd, who in 1979 received a document released by the USAF. The document was identified as AFCIN-1E-0, and dated 3 November 1961.
Although the document had deletions, the following could be made out:
* "...in addition to their staff duty assignment, intelligence team personnel have peacetime duty functions in support of such Air Force projects as Moondust, Bluefly and UFO..."
* "Blue Fly has been established to facilitate expeditious delivery to FTD of Moon Dust or other items of great technical intelligence interest. AFCIN SOP for Blue Fly operations, February 1960, provides for 1127th participation."
* "As a specilized aspect of its over all material exploitation program, Headquarters USAF has established Project Moon Dust to locate, recover and deliver descended foreign space vehicles. ICGL # 4, 25 April 1961, delineates collection responsibilities."
* "Peacetime employment of AFCIN intelligence team capability is provided for in UFO investigation (AFR 200-2) and in support of Air Force Systems Command (AFSC) Foreign Technology Division (FTD) Project Moon Dust and Blue Fly...These three peacetime projects all involve a potential for employment of qualified field intelligence personnel on a quick reaction basis to recover or perform field exploitation of unidentified flying objects, or known Soviet/bloc aerospace vehicles..."
I located a website (click here) which had the text of the 25 April 1961 document - titled US Air Force Intelligence Guidance Collection Letter 4.
Its subject was Moon Dust reporting in "...response to Moon Dust alerts."

- Space track R orbital debris; policy formulations for above; discussions of hazards and liability due to falling space debris; clarification of NASA's role in relation to other government agencies and its role overseas; some Project Moon Dust documents; Gemini and Apollo missions; correspondence and meeting files. Files from the State Department included UFO cases and reports of sightings. These documents shed light on the history of the time, but overall, that's as far as they went."
"However, some documents did reveal interesting bits of information, even if not about Kecksburg. For example, a one page "memo for record" was prepared by Richard Schullherr, a NASA engineer whose responsibilities included fragology (he was custodian of the fragology files) and who was a liaison to Project Moon Dust, the federal program involving the retrieval of space debris and objects of unknown origin. Dated January 18, 1969, the memo records a visit Schulherr made to the Foreign Technology Division (FTD) of the Air Force Systems Command at Wright Patterson AFB. The purpose was to identify some space debris which had been sent to
NASA, and to "re-establish personal liaison with newly assigned FTD Moondust personnel" headed by Lt. Robert McGill."

Neil's source was a correspond-ent called Nick (whose email address I have on file), and one of the eyewitnesses in question was his father. Nick is anxious that the sighting be preserved, so here is his account of it: "I am 39 years old with three children and my father is now 72. He was one of the last people to have been conscripted to national service, serving as navigator on RAF Shackleton aircraft in 1957, flying missions over Europe and much of South America. The official job of the Shackleton was as a spotting aircraft, and both pilot and crew were highly trained in this respect; their job was to search for submarines and relay the positions back to base. One of the tell-tale signs they used to look for [from] high above was a dark shape underwater, which could often be a shark or whale or other creature, but occasionally they would get lucky and find a submarine near to the surface. On one occasion, having seen such a dark shape near the surface, they flew down to investi-gate, and as they flew by this shape, every crew member on board saw the same thing - the neck and head of a large sea creature protruding from the surface. The nearest thing they could think of at the time was a plesiosaur. They were all in agreement but of course the pilot on the way home forbade them absolutely from talking about it; if they had done so they would all have been immed-iately grounded and accused of being drunk on duty. "So anyway, my father decided to research what the creature might have been, and found that it was almost definitely an 'elasmosaurus' [long-necked plesio-saur], as the one thing that was very obvious was the huge length of the animal's neck. My father was forced to conclude, and of course he'd read all about the coelacanth, that there were indeed much larger 'extinct' creatures out there, unknown to science. He told me of the incident when I reached adulthood. Twenty years on, he still will swear to his grave that this is what they all saw on the flight... "The year was 1957, the location was 'about 500 miles [800km] north of the Canary Islands, in open sea'. The RAF Squadron was 228 Squadron, flying out of St Eval in Cornwall. (This air base has since been closed, but I believe remnants of the site remain.) I don't know who the other crewmembers were and I have been thinking about making an official enquiry to the RAF archives. However, what I hope is important is the location (vague, sorry), species and date. I am more than aware that most scientists consider the poss-ibility of any large dinosaur [sic] still alive as astronomic-ally small, and my father himself also thinks now with sadness that he might have seen one of the last ones; his own reasoning is that at this point, not so long after the war, there really was not much shipping around; indeed, the area where they had the sighting was entirely devoid of shipping and maybe this was the reason the creature had considered it safe to surface, far from the throb of ships' propellers." One zoologist who read Nick's account suggested that perhaps they had seen a tentacle from a giant squid rise above the water surface, but Nick's father emphatic-ally discounted any such poss-ibility.
